It was after midnight before the families of the seven crewmen — those who had them and wanted to take them along — were rescued and safely in the ship. There were over thirty people, including grown and married children, but there was room for all. Despite his daytime nap, Race was tired and very hungry. He had had no food since the evening before, some thirty hours. But it was now or never. He wanted to leave by night, before his activities were traced.
