CHAPTER 6_THE CALL OF THE MOON

847 Words
The howls echoed through the night like haunting music. Lina stood frozen beside the window, her heart pounding as the sound carried through the cold air. One howl was followed by another, deeper and louder, until the forest seemed alive with voices. It sent chills down her spine. She had never heard anything like it before. It wasn’t just wolves. It sounded… organized. Like they were calling to each other. Lina’s eyes slowly moved toward her phone lying on the bed. Adrian’s message flashed in her mind again. Stay away from the forest tonight. That warning suddenly felt much more serious. “What exactly is happening out there?” Lina whispered to herself. Her curiosity battled with her fear. Part of her wanted to lock the door and forget everything about werewolves. But another part of her wanted answers. And that part was winning. Ten minutes later, Lina found herself putting on a hoodie and sneakers. “This is a bad idea,” she muttered as she quietly opened the hostel door. The hallway was empty. Most students were still out enjoying the night. Lina slipped outside into the cool air, her heart beating faster with every step she took toward the path that led near the forest. The campus looked peaceful under the moonlight. Too peaceful. As she walked closer to the trees, the howls grew louder. They weren’t random anymore. They were gathering. Lina stopped near the edge of the forest, hiding behind a large tree. Her breathing slowed as she carefully looked ahead. And then she saw them. Wolves. At least seven of them stood in a clearing deep within the forest. Massive wolves with thick fur and glowing eyes. Some had golden eyes. Some had amber. And one… had silver. Adrian. Even in his wolf form, Lina somehow recognized him instantly. He was bigger than the others, his silver eyes shining brightly in the moonlight. The wolves stood in a circle as if they were waiting for something. Suddenly, a loud growl broke the silence. Another wolf stepped forward from the trees. This one was enormous. Larger than all the others. His fur was dark brown, almost black, and his golden eyes burned fiercely as he walked into the clearing. The other wolves lowered their heads slightly. Respect. Or fear. Lina’s breath caught. “That must be the Alpha,” she whispered. The massive wolf lifted his head toward the moon and let out a powerful howl. The sound shook the air around them. The rest of the wolves responded together, their voices rising in a chilling chorus. Lina’s heart pounded wildly as she watched the scene unfold. This wasn’t just a group of wolves. It was a pack. A real werewolf pack. Then something unexpected happened. The Alpha suddenly turned his head. Directly toward Lina. Her blood ran cold. His golden eyes narrowed slightly as he stared straight at the tree where she was hiding. For a moment, Lina thought she might faint. “How… how does he know I’m here?” she whispered. The Alpha let out a low warning growl. Instantly, the other wolves became alert. Several of them turned toward Lina’s direction. Panic rushed through her. “Oh no…” Adrian’s silver eyes locked onto her. Even from the distance, Lina could see the shock in his expression. Then anger. He quickly stepped forward, blocking the Alpha’s path. The two wolves stared at each other intensely. The Alpha growled again. Adrian responded with a deep growl of his own. It sounded almost like an argument. Lina realized something terrifying. Adrian was defending her. But he was standing up to the Alpha to do it. The Alpha’s golden eyes flickered dangerously. For a moment, Lina thought the two wolves might attack each other. But after a tense silence, the Alpha finally looked away. The other wolves slowly relaxed. Adrian turned back toward Lina. Even in wolf form, his silver eyes carried a clear message. Leave. Lina didn’t need to be told twice. She quickly turned and ran back toward the campus, her heart racing wildly. She didn’t stop running until she reached the safety of her hostel building. Only then did she lean against the wall, trying to catch her breath. “What did I just witness?” she whispered. Inside the forest, Adrian watched her disappear. When he turned back around, the Alpha had already shifted back into his human form. A tall, powerful man with sharp golden eyes. His expression was not pleased. “Care to explain,” the Alpha said coldly, “why a human was watching our pack meeting?” The other wolves shifted back into humans as well. Victoria crossed her arms, glaring at Adrian. “I told you humans were a problem,” she said. Adrian clenched his jaw. He knew exactly what they were thinking. And he knew this was about to become a very serious problem. Because the human they had just seen… Was not just any human. She was his mate. And the pack could never find out. To be continued....
