Koyah Abdel dragged herself out of the Heron tower’s elevator, checked her watch, and sighed. Made it just in time. Nodding to the hostess of the Duck & Waffle, she spotted a familiar ponytail by one of the windows, a plate of bread and bacon wrapped dates on the table in front of her, that was being ignored in favor of staring out the fortieth story window at the twinkle of lights across the early morning darkness. “Is this seat taken?” Abigail turned slowly, her eyes puffy and red from tears, but still smiled up at her despite her fatigue. “I believe it is now.” Koyah considered her normal reserve in public, and the night they’d each had, and decided to lean in to kiss her girlfriend gently before taking her seat.
