Chapter 40 Wren I couldn't call him a friend. Not after everything. The word barely crossed my mind before I discarded it. Knox wouldn't let it leave my mouth. He wasn't patient when it came to us. He never had been. The exclusive conversation. The countless times he'd corrected me whenever I tried to blur the line between us. The way he'd shown up at my front door after ignoring every one of my calls, carrying three Antonio's pizzas across the city instead of replying to a single text. This wasn't about the food. This was about making a point. His eyes never left mine. Dark. Unyielding. There was no room for negotiation in that stare. If I introduced him as a friend, or anything less than what he'd demanded we were, I didn't need to imagine what would happen. He wouldn't play along.
