"Don't do it, Knox." For once, my voice was serious. No sarcasm. No attitude. Just honesty. "You might not have a conscience, but I do."
His eyes narrowed slightly. I continued before he could interrupt.
"I've been telling you from the beginning that what I did was a mistake."
My grip tightened.
"Everything with that envelope happened in the heat of the moment."
I shook my head.
"I was angry. Hurt. Humiliated."
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"And apparently stupid."
Knox remained silent. Watching me. Listening.
"I don't want it anymore." The confession felt surprisingly easy. "Not because I care about Axel." I immediately clarified. "Trust me, I don't."
