Chapter 14: Friendship

I dried myself as best I could with a towel and when I came out, I was surprised to see Romulus standing there, and I grew scared. He towered over me as he was the same height as his brothers at six, two while I was five, one. Yep, I don’t know why, but people always seemed surprised that I could possibly be that short when I told them my height. Pfft, we couldn’t all be five, eleven model tall unfortunately. “I’m sorry, I’ll get back to work,” I said softly. He grabbed my arm surprisingly gently and said, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that. My brother is right, we are supposed to be preparing to become alpha of the pack and that was not alpha behaviour, it was childish.” “It’s ok,” I mumbled. “No it’s not, we don’t have to like each other, but that doesn’t give me the right to do what I did just now. I’m sorry.” He sort of seemed uncomfortable after that and just walked off. I was surprised at his apology. Romulus seemed to hate me more than anyone else. The group that attacked me may have been violent, but there was something about the way Romulus would look at me sometimes, in a way that was cold and hateful. I finished up in the kitchen like Fenris had told me to and then Jax reappeared in a better mood than usual, clearly he’d had his needs satisfied. I looked down at his top and saw some blood seeping through it, he followed my gaze and laughed at my face. “Don’t worry dude, it’s my own blood, I enjoy pain, remember?” My eyes grew wider as I remembered, I hadn’t thought he meant to the point of bleeding, and my reaction only made him laugh more. “Quit worrying, and you can stop f.ucking washing up too, it’s never ending with these greedy f.ucks. Come on, we are meeting my sister.” Jax tugged me along and was pulling me when we passed by the alpha. “Jax, where do you think you’re going?” “I’m meeting Annie.” “And taking my omega with you?” “Your omega? Dad, you make it sound like she’s your s.exual play thing, besides, she keeps me on my best behaviour so it’s good having her with me.” The alpha who always seemed so cold and stern actually blushed a little at Jax’s comment of me being his s.exual plaything. He must have felt embarrassed because he mumbled, “fine, whatever, just go.” He quickly left us alone and Jax grinned at me. “Dad hates when you bring up anything embarrassing like sex.” We went outside and Jax called Annie. “Hey sis, you’re f.ucking late, we are still on for today, right?” “P.rick, I’m almost there, you hot-tempered motherfucker. I’ve got Lisa with me, she misses you.” Jax laughed softly and said, “good, I miss her too.” They hung up and he turned to me. “Come on, you fucker, let’s wait outside the gates.” I grinned, used to his sense of humor by now, and we headed out to wait for Annie. While we were waiting, Jax looked at my clothes, they were his that he had let me borrow, and he raised his eyebrows at me. “Expect my sister to take you out on a shopping trip at some point, she barely accepts my style, let alone yours.” I frowned at him and said, “are you saying I have terrible style, Mr?” Realizing his dangerous mistake, he quickly said, “of course not darling, you’re perfect, I’m just saying my sister is a bit of a fashion freak.” I shoved him playfully, knowing it was safe to do so with him, and he ruffled my hair and accidentally got his fingers caught in the curls. “Ow!” I yelped. “f***k, sorry,” he laughed, and eventually untangled himself from them. They finally pulled up to us and Annie’s daughter was adorable with long blonde hair and big blue eyes, no one would have guessed she was adopted. She was eight, I remembered Annie saying, and as soon as she saw Jax she climbed out of the car and flung herself into his arms. Laughing, he picked her up and planted a quick kiss on her lips before hugging her tightly. “I missed you so much, uncle Jax!” “I missed you too, kitty.” I remembered them explaining her nickname kitty had come from her obsession with cats and kittens, ironically. Apparently it was normal to find her running around the house on all fours as a cat, with socks for paws on her hands and a tea towel for a tail. When Jax put her down, she looked at me and smiled shyly. I smiled shyly back, and then Annie told everyone to get the f***k into the car. Jax had to pry Lisa off from his lap when she tried sitting on him, instead placing her next to him, so she could wear her seat belt. She chatted through the whole journey and after the forty-five-minute car ride we pulled up into a country park. We had a picnic that Annie had made and when it came to the woods, I was happy. Being in nature and the woods had always been the one place I had always felt happy and safe, and it wasn’t long before I was running through them playfully and Lisa joined in happily. Even as a teenager, I had always had something about me that drew children to me, probably because I was pretty childish myself as an omega. Both me and Lisa played pretend animals for an hour before my old self ran out of energy and needed to sit down. I noticed Jax seemed colder and more distant with me while we were out, when I thought about it, he was like that whenever another pack member was around too, except for Sheila. He was protective of me yet at the same time he put more of a distance between us like it was just a professional curtesy. I wondered if he was embarrassed by how I looked, or if I was an omega, or both. On the ride home, I made sure to sit next to him, which was difficult because Lisa wanted to sit next to me, in the end we compromised so that I sat in the middle. Apparently, I was her new favorite person. I whispered into Jax’s ear, “what’s wrong?” He frowned at me and answered, “nothing, why?” “Why do you become less friendly around other people and out in public? You don’t sit anywhere near me, you barely speak to me, and you don’t joke around or act playful with me like you usually do when it’s just me and you.” He pulled a face like I was being dramatic and said, “I hadn’t even noticed, it’s not on purpose.” He shrugged a little too defensively for my liking. “Are you embarrassed of me?” I looked him in the eyes, not caring that he was an alpha wolf for a moment, and he laughed at me In surprise, “what? No.” “Have you ever been close with a submissive?” “Of course, I don’t just hang out with dominant wolves.” “Hmm, what about romantically or even just as close friends with one?” When he didn’t answer, I knew it was a no. “Have you ever been in a relationship with a submissive before?” It was his turn to make eye contact as he answered, “no, I’ve never dated a submissive wolf or f.ucked one, some foreplay with Sheila sometimes? Sure, but I’ve never kissed or even f.ucking held hands with one let alone be friends. It doesn’t mean jack s.hit.” He was angry and annoyed, and I knew it was best to leave him to cool down. Annie had the music on so no one had overheard, thankfully. When it was just us two again back at the pack house and alone, Jax gave me the silent treatment. He wouldn’t even look at me. It was awkward, and the atmosphere was tense, but I was annoyed too, and so I made no effort to apologize. I thought things over just to be sure I wasn’t overreacting, but I was sure I wasn’t. I had only asked if he’d ever been close with a submissive wolf before. I knew he hadn’t with an omega as they’d all made it clear I was the first they’d met or known of in person. Annie came in with us to say hello to the rest of the pack before leaving. Sensing the tension and noticing Jax being quiet, she said, “whatever is going on with you two sort it the f***k out and kiss and makeup.” Rolling her eyes at Jax, she walked off with Lisa following behind. Jax disappeared for a while, and his hair was damp and messy from a shower when he returned. He was still silent and I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what was going on behind those gorgeous eyes of his when he looked at me. He didn’t smile or frown or anything. Feeling uncomfortable, I decided to be really brave and probably stupid and do what Annie had said quite literally. I went up to him and kissed him lightly on the lips. “What’s that for?” He asked. “I wanted to apologize for being so insecure about our friendship.” Raising his eyebrows, he finally smiled at me and said, “maybe we should fall out more often.” He tried to kiss me again, but I jumped away before he could reach me. “Uh, uh, we are not having any sort of make out session or casual fun.” “Yeah yeah, you want love and romance and bla bla bla,” he teased, making me push him playfully. He grabbed me and tickled me until I screamed loud enough that two pack members came to see what was wrong. Jax quickly let me go and looked around the room and up at the ceiling, trying to feign innocence. “What’s going on?” The female wolf asked, her name was Michelle, and she had golden blonde hair like Jax. Jax looked at her confused and said, “huh? What are you talking about?” “We heard a scream.” “Nope, not us, must have been outside or something.” “It was definitely out here, Jax, what are you up to?” “Well, if you must know, nosy Michelle, I was fingering Rose here, and I guess I’m just that good.” “Jax!” I hissed, absolutely mortified, even though he was only joking. Michelle blushed and backed up into her friend who had followed her, and they quickly left the awkward situation. I turned on Jax. “Why did you say that, you nut job!” He snorted a laugh at the insult and said, “it’s the fastest way to get rid of people, just embarrass the s.hit out of everyone.” I had to laugh, he truly was the master of being blunt. I stopped laughing as soon as Romulus came in and quickly started washing the dishes. He grabbed Fenris in to a headlock when he followed behind. “Get off!” Fenris growled, but Romulus ignored him and kept him in a tight headlock until Fenris fought back, he punched Romulus in the stomach and positioned himself so that he could flip him over his body, making Romulus slam his back hard into the floor. Romulus was laughing, and Fenris shoved his head back on the floor when he tried to get up. He stepped over his brother to grab some food and then left again, the only time anyone saw Fenris was when he came to get food, really. He was scarily good at fighting, I’d seen him practice with another wolf, and he’d won the fight within three minutes and hadn’t even broken a sweat, I wondered if Jax and Romulus were as good at fighting as he was. Jax had to be, or at least be close to it, seeing as most of his victims weren’t even human and would more than likely take a lot of strength to restrain and bring back to his warehouse still alive. Jax’s mom came in and smiled at us both happily. “Aww, Jax, I’m so glad you’ve finally found a friend who seems to keep you better behaved.” We knew what she meant by better behaved and Jax rolled his eyes at her. “How are you doing, Rose?” She asked me. “I’m good, thank you, Mrs knight.” She waved a hand at me and said, “oh, call me Savannah.” We were making small talk while Jax went off to do something. The alpha walked in and kissed Savannah on the top of her head. He realized it was me she was talking to, and he gave her a look. “What Romeo?” She challenged him. “You don’t normally talk to the submissive wolves, so why are you talking to the omega?” She startled us both when she growled inhumanly at him. “I do speak to them actually, Rose just happens to be my favorite, she’s lovely, you forget they have feelings just like us,” she snapped at him. He rose an eyebrow, but he backed off, not wanting to anger her any more than she already was, he even smiled at me before heading to the fridge for food. This pack was strange, on the one hand, I was bullied a lot and called all sorts of awful names, treated worse than a street rat at times and yet, other times, like now, I’d be shown kindness, although to be fair, the Luna herself had never been mean to me.
