I went into town anyway and I didn’t ask permission and I didn’t wait for anyone to offer to come with me. The road felt heavier than it had before and the air carried something that didn’t belong. The shop was easy to find because people were gathered outside and police tape cut across the entrance. The glass door was shattered and the front windows were cracked and streaked. The place looked like it had been hit fast and hard and without hesitation. Two police cars sat out front and another rolled up as I crossed the street. The officers moved around like they were trying to look in control while not understanding what they were dealing with. I slowed as I got closer and I took everything in without making it obvious. Shelves inside were knocked over and products were scattered
