Chapter 4: The Echo He Doesn’t Talk About

1183 Words
The next morning, Riverton felt different. Not brighter. Not softer. Just… charged. Like the air had decided to pay attention to me for the first time. I stepped outside my building and instantly regretted not bringing a jacket. The breeze was sharp, carrying hints of rain and something else I couldn’t place something electric. My mind replayed everything from yesterday in loops I couldn’t escape. Zayn’s voice. His warning. The way he looked at me like he knew parts of me I didn’t speak out loud. And then Luna innocent, warm, trusting without hesitation. It all sat in my chest like a quiet storm. I walked toward the bus stop, telling myself today would be normal. Quiet. Boring, even. But Riverton didn’t do boring, not for me. I had barely made it two blocks when someone fell into step beside me. Morning. My heart stopped. Then restarted, too fast. Zayn. He wore a simple black jacket and dark jeans, but he looked effortlessly put together, like the world adjusted itself around him. His presence hit me before his voice did that calm, steady energy that made me feel warm even in cold air. You walk this early every day? he asked. I swallowed. Not really. I just… needed some air. You always need some air. The tone wasn’t mocking. Just observant. Too observant. I looked ahead, ignoring the flutter in my chest. Are you following me? No,he said smoothly. But this route happens to be part of mine. Part of his? To where? For what? I didn’t ask. He wouldn’t tell me anyway not yet. We walked in silence for a few steps before he added, Luna liked you. The corners of my lips lifted involuntarily. She’s sweet. Mmh.He paused. She doesn’t warm up to people quickly. Something in the way he said it made me stop walking. Are you saying you’re surprised she liked me? I’m saying,he said calmly, meeting my eyes, she sees people clearly. She sees intentions. She saw something in you she trusted. My throat tightened for reasons I couldn’t explain. And you? He blinked once slow, assessing. What about me? Do you trust me? A question I didn’t know I would ask. A question he didn’t expect. His jaw shifted slightly, like he was weighing the truth. I don’t trust people easily, he said, voice low. But I don’t feel the need to protect myself from you. My chest warmed and tightened at the same time. Before I could respond, his phone buzzed. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his entire expression changed. His softness disappeared. His calm stiffened into something cold and controlled. His eyes those warm, studying eyes turned sharp. Zayn? I whispered. He ignored the buzzing this time and looked at me as if remembering I was there. A shadow crossed his features something that didn’t belong on a quiet morning. I have to go,he said. Is everything okay? His jaw tensed. Don’t worry about it. But I did. I couldn’t help it. The shift in him was too drastic, too telling. He started to walk away, but halfway down the street, he stopped and looked back at me. Amara. I stepped closer. Yes? If anyone asks you anything about me, or about yesterday… you don’t answer. You don’t mention me. You don’t mention Luna. You don’t mention anything. A chill crawled down my spine. Who would ask? Just promise me,he said quietly. I swallowed hard. I promise. He nodded once slow, relieved, but still tense then disappeared around the corner. The street suddenly felt colder after he left. Hours Later At Work My part-time shift at the café helped distract me. The steam from the espresso machine, the smell of fresh pastries, the chatter of people who had normal lives it all pulled me back to reality. But around noon, while wiping down a counter, I caught something out of the corner of my eye. Two men. Dressed too formally for a casual café. Standing just outside the window. Looking in. Looking at me. My stomach sank. They didn’t come in. They didn’t order. They just… watched. One of them spoke into a phone, eyes still locked on me. The other scanned the inside of the café like he was checking exits, corners, faces. Then they walked away. But the unease stayed like a weight in my chest. After My Shift The Shadow That Returned I stepped outside, gripping my bag tightly, scanning the area before walking. I wasn’t paranoid just careful. Zayn’s warning played in my head on repeat. If anyone asks… Don’t answer. But the street was empty. Too empty. I walked faster. The wind picked up, whipping my hair behind me, pushing cold air into my lungs. My heartbeat was a quiet drum I couldn’t slow down. That’s when I heard a car engine. Smooth. Low. Familiar. My heart leaped. Then the SUV pulled up beside me. The window rolled down. Zayn. Except this time his expression was different not guarded, not unreadable. He looked worried. Fast walking toward me worried. Get in,he said sharply. I froze. What Amara, get in the car. His tone wasn’t angry. It was urgent. My pulse spiked. I slipped into the passenger seat without another word. The moment the door shut, he pulled away from the curb. My breath shook. Zayn, what’s happening? Did anyone talk to you today? No. Did anyone follow you? Try to approach you? No, but.. My voice cracked. Two men were watching me outside work. His hands tightened on the wheel. What did they look like? Formal. Quiet. They didn’t come in. They just… stared. He exhaled sharply through his nose. “They weren’t supposed to involve you. My voice trembled. Who are they? He didn’t answer. Instead, he parked abruptly in an empty street, killed the engine, and leaned back in his seat like he was trying to think before he broke. I watched him. The powerful calm he always carried was cracking. Finally, he spoke voice low, controlled, but deeply honest. There are things about my life you shouldn’t be anywhere near, Amara. A chill ran through me. But I am. Yes. His eyes met mine. And that’s the problem. I swallowed hard. Zayn… what are you involved in? He shook his head slowly. Not involved. Born into. Born into. Not chosen. Inherited. Like a curse. He looked out the windshield, jaw tense. I tried to stay invisible. To build a quiet life for Luna. To keep distance from people. Then he turned his head really turned and his eyes locked onto mine with a truth that made my stomach flip. But you walked into this city, and somehow… you walked straight into me too. Silence settled thickly between us. I whispered, Are you in danger? No, he said. I’m the danger. And I don’t want it touching you. He exhaled once, slow and heavy. But it’s too late now. They saw you. My heartbeat stilled completely. What does that mean? His voice lowered, soft and sharp at once. It means you’re not invisible anymore.
