CHAPTER 2

Ryker's POV I could feel someone's gaze on me as I skated across the ice. I passed the puck hard into the opponent's net, my breath turning to vapour in the cold. Goal! The crowd roared and chanted my name like a mini-god. The sound barely reached my ears, as my eyes were fixed on her, Harper. She lowered her eyes when our gazes met and a dull ache tugged in my chest. What the hell was that? The coach barked out some orders to us after the game ended. My eyes still remained on her for some damn reason I couldn't fathom. My wolf kept growling in my head, demanding to break free. I couldn't let that happen. Not in the midst of humans who thought that I was human too. To them, I was the golden boy, a wonder kid chasing an NHL dream. But behind closed doors, I was something else, a creature that would mostly scare every human here off. As Harper left the ice, I followed behind her. She didn't notice what I was doing. And I didn't mean to stalk her. I just wanted to confirm whatever that was that I felt earlier. "Hey, Harper!" I called out and she stopped in her tracks. Slowly, she turned around. Her green siren-shaped eyes went wide as she stared at me. She was the coach's daughter and worse? She was human. However, I couldn't shake off the irresistible pull I was feeling towards her right then. I wasn't supposed to feel whatever I was feeling right then. What was happening to me? For a fleeting seconds, my wolf surged forward and my eyes glowed red. 'What the hell? Are you planning to scare her and reveal our identity here in school?' I snapped at Darko through the mindlink. He went silent, like he always did whenever he was guilty. I moved my eyes back to Harper. A flicker of fear and shock passed her features. My lips parted to speak before she began to think of what had just happened. "Good game," she said, too quickly. I watched her closely. Her chest rose and fell. "You were watching," I said and I heard her breath catch in her throat. She stepped back and swallowed hard as if her throat had gone dry. She blinked. "I'm not watching. I'm the sports editor and I always watch." I knew what I was saying. She wasn't just watching the sport. She was watching me. I felt her eyes on me before I saw her. And that intensity and pull? I couldn't explain it. "No," my voice was quieter now. "You were watching me, Harper." Maybe I needed to remind her of who she was. She was the coach's daughter. She was off-limit to every hockey player in the school. I'd heard her father a couple of times warning her to stay away from jocks like us. She swallowed hard as if her throat had gone dry. Her lips parted to speak, but no words came out. It felt like she was short of words. Then, she did one thing that made my eyebrows shoot up. She bolted. She slipped past me, practically running down the corridor towards the exit as if I was nothing but trouble to her. A sly smirk tugged at the corners of my lips as I watched her run. I shouldn't be amused, but I was. And why did I find her attractive? "Hey, Ryker," Rowan's voice reached my ears from behind. "What are you watching?" I could already picture the sly grin dancing on his features already. He got closer. "Really?" His eyebrows shot up when he saw Harper's retreating figure. "She's human, Alpha. Off-limit." He pointed out the obvious as if that would stop how my wolf was stirring inside of me right then. As the future Alpha of the Red Claw Pack, Rowan made sure I had nothing to do with humans, my father's order, especially the females, since he was my future beta and best friend. "I know she is," I snapped at him and then shrugged my shoulders. "Did I say otherwise?" A sigh slipped from his lips as he stared at me, before bowing slightly. "I'm sorry, Alpha," his voice dropped to a whisper. "Your father wants you in the pack. He sent a message," he informed me in a sad tone. My eyes went wide slightly at his words. We both knew the implications of leaving the college in the middle of a championship qualifiers game. My father didn't just see hockey as my passion or career. He saw it as a training to rule and a way to show the werewolves dominance while disguising as humans. He ruled the pack with an iron fist and wanted me to do the same when I took over which was why he demanded my submission every damn time. He didn't think of the outcomes of his actions. He believed I could face it just because I was the future Alpha of his pack. An exasperated sigh slipped from my lips. "I'm not going," I growled at Rowan. "Tell that to his messenger." Fear widened Rowan's eyes. "That's dangerous, Ryker. You know what Alpha Marcus is capable of doing." "Then are you asking me to leave in the middle of the championship qualifiers game? Are you asking me to give up this game this year again?" I spat, my eyes burning with rage. His face fell. He knew how I gave up the championship game last year just because I submitted to my father. And he was doing the same this year again. If I gave up again, my dream shattered and Alpha Marcus didn't give a f**k about it other than becoming a strong Alpha for his pack. "I'm sorry, Alpha. I will let his messenger know that you are busy and can't return home now," Rowan nodded his head. Although I could still see the uncertainty in his eyes. Suddenly, a cold voice roared in my head through the mindlink. 'You dare not reject my order, Ryker.' Rowan flinched beside me. He'd heard it too.
