The wind howled through the gaping hole where the reinforced window of the penthouse office used to be. Papers—confidential merger documents and encrypted financial reports—swirled violently in the cold air like a localized snowstorm, settling over a ruined landscape of shattered glass and splintered mahogany. In the distance, the wailing of the automated security alarms sliced through the heavy silence of the room.
But down on the plush, glass-strewn carpet behind the massive desk, Elena Rostova heard none of it. The alarms faded into a dull white noise.
Her entire world had narrowed down to the heavy, crushing weight of the man pinning her to the floor, and the stormy, piercing gray eyes that were currently dissecting her soul.
"Who the hell are you, really?" Alvaro’s voice was barely more than a whisper. It was a dark rumble, yet it vibrated with a dangerous, absolute authority that cut straight through the adrenaline pumping in Elena’s veins.
Her heart, which usually maintained a flat, icy rhythm even in active war zones, gave a sudden, treacherous flutter. It wasn't the unseen sniper that unsettled her. It was him. The sheer physical dominance of Alvaro was overwhelming, an undeniable gravity anchoring her to the floor. His broad chest pressed flush against hers, his long legs caging her lower body, trapping her in complete vulnerability. The heat radiating from his body burned through the thin fabric of her cardigan. She could smell his cologne—a rich blend of cedar and bergamot—mixed with the sharp scent of gunpowder lingering in the air.
Think, Elena. Her mind raced, sifting through contingencies in a fraction of a second. She was a phantom operative trained by elite shadow agencies. She would not let an arrogant billionaire unravel her carefully constructed cover in five minutes on her first day.
Elena forced her breathing to quicken, a calculated manipulation of her autonomic nervous system. She allowed her pupils to dilate, mimicking the biological response of raw civilian panic. She let a helpless shiver rack her frame.
"I… I don't understand what you mean, sir," Elena stammered, her voice trembling with perfect fragility. She squirmed under his iron grip, letting out a frightened gasp. "Please, Mr. Alvaro. We need to get out of here! The shooter might still be out there—"
"Stop," Alvaro commanded.
The single word held the devastating weight of a physical blow. It instantly silenced her fabricated panic.
He didn't flinch. The alarms were blaring, a sniper had just put an armor-piercing bullet into his wall inches from his skull, and yet, the CEO of Vanguard Enterprises was terrifyingly calm. His entire focus, predatory and absolute, was locked onto her. He studied her face the way a master chess player studies a board three moves from checkmate.
"Do not insult my intelligence by playing the terrified secretary," Alvaro said, his tone dripping with cold calculation. His grip on her wrists tightened just enough to prove he was in physical control. "I pay very close attention to details. The details of what just happened do not align with a woman who spent the last five years answering phones for a mediocre accounting firm."
Elena swallowed hard, fighting every ingrained instinct to break his grip and throw him over her shoulder. She maintained her wide-eyed expression, forcing hot tears to prick her eyes. "My father was military. He made me take Krav Maga. It was just instinct, I swear! I saw the reflection on the glass and I just jumped—"
Alvaro let out a harsh sound that was half-laugh, half-growl. He lowered his head, his handsome face coming dangerously close to hers. The proximity was intoxicating, blurring the line between a physical interrogation and an unsettling intimacy.
"Krav Maga," Alvaro repeated slowly. "Fascinating. Tell me, Elena, does a weekend class teach a civilian to identify the micro-glint of a sniper’s scope from three hundred yards away, hidden behind an overcast sky?"
Elena’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. She had severely underestimated him.
"Does Krav Maga," Alvaro continued, his stormy eyes dropping to her lips before snapping back to her gaze with lethal intensity, "teach you to clear a ten-foot distance, calculate my exact body weight, and execute a flawless tactical takedown? You deliberately shielded my vitals. And right now, despite your pathetic attempt to fake hyperventilation, your pulse underneath my thumb is entirely too steady for a woman who just dodged a bullet."
He deliberately dragged his calloused thumb over her racing pulse point. He was reading her body's true biological reactions, entirely bypassing her verbal lies.
"So, I will ask you one more time," Alvaro whispered. "Who sent you?"
Before Elena could formulate another lie, the heavy oak doors burst open with a deafening crash.
"Mr. Alvaro! Sir, are you hit?!"
Six heavily armed security personnel flooded into the room, boots crunching over broken glass. At the helm was Vance, Head of Vanguard Security. Their weapons were drawn, scanning the shattered window.
The sudden intrusion broke the heavy tension. In a fraction of a second, Alvaro’s demeanor shifted to the authoritative CEO. But what sent a spike of confusion through Elena's trained mind was his immediate physical reaction. Before the security team could fully spot them tangled on the floor, Alvaro swiftly shifted his broad shoulders, subtly angling his large body to completely shield Elena from the guards' line of sight.
It was an instinctual, fiercely protective maneuver. He knew she was lying, yet his first primal instinct was to hide her from the eyes of other men.
"Stand down, Vance," Alvaro barked, commanding instant obedience. He released Elena’s wrists and pushed himself off the floor, brushing glass off his suit. "I am unharmed."
Vance rushed forward in panic. "Sir, we need to evacuate you to the underground bunker immediately. The police are en route!"
"No," Alvaro snapped. "I am not scuttling into a basement while my competitors watch on the evening news. Lock down the building. I want a full tactical sweep and the security footage on my desk in an hour."
"But sir, protocol—"
"I write the protocols, Vance," Alvaro interrupted quietly. "Do your job."
Vance swallowed hard, nodding. His eyes finally drifted to the floor, spotting Elena.
This was Elena’s golden moment. With a soft whimper, she curled into herself, grabbing the ruined desk to pull herself up on trembling legs. Her glasses were askew, her sleeve torn, revealing a bleeding gash. She looked exactly like a terrified civilian.
"Miss Roberts," Vance said softly. "We need to get you to the medical bay. You're bleeding."
Elena shrank back, letting out a sob. "I'm okay... it was just so loud."
"Escort Miss Roberts to the medical suite on the fourth floor," Vance ordered his men.
It was the perfect escape. Once in the medical bay, she could contact the Board of Directors. She took a step toward the guards.
"Stop."
The word cut through the air like a guillotine blade. The guards froze. Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly raised her head.
Alvaro was watching her. His face was an unreadable mask, but his stormy gray eyes blazed with a dark challenge. He saw right through her tears.
"Miss Roberts stays with me," Alvaro stated.
"Sir, she's injured," Vance protested cautiously. "She needs medical attention and questioning by the authorities."
"I have a fully equipped trauma kit in my private suite," Alvaro replied coldly. "I will ensure she receives medical attention. Vanguard’s legal team will handle the authorities. No one speaks to my assistant until I say so. Is that perfectly clear?"
Vance hesitated, but the icy glare left no debate. "Crystal clear, sir."
"Get out. Do not let anyone up here without my permission."
Within thirty seconds, the security team filed out, the heavy doors closing with a thud. Elena stood rigidly, her trained mind calculating the distance to the door. Could she fight her way out? Yes. Could she do it without blowing her cover? No.
Alvaro walked toward the heavy oak doors and turned the brass deadbolt. Click.
He had just locked them in.
He stalked toward her with the quiet, lethal grace of an apex predator, his immense physical presence consuming the space. He reached out, his warm hand gently gripping her uninjured arm. With his other hand, he took the faux-prescription glasses off her face and tossed them carelessly onto the ruined desk.
"The act is over, Elena," Alvaro said softly, using her real first name for the very first time. "We are alone. The police are downstairs. My security is outside. You have exactly ten seconds to tell me who you are, and why a highly trained killer is fetching my coffee."
He leaned in, his breath ghosting over her neck, his voice dropping to a silken whisper. "Tell me the truth, or I will open that door and feed you to the wolves myself. Ten..."
Elena’s heart hammered relentlessly against her ribs.
"Nine..."
The game of cat-and-mouse had just turned deadly.
