Chapter 3: The Devil’s Contract "Eight..." The number vibrated against the shell of Elena’s ear, a dark, low frequency that seemed to hum directly into her bloodstream. Alvaro was so close she could feel the steady, terrifyingly calm rhythm of his heartbeat against her own chest. "Seven..." Elena’s mind, usually a pristine, highly organized tactical grid, was rapidly calculating her shrinking list of options. She could dislocate his thumb, sweep his leading leg, and have him in a sleeper hold in less than three seconds. But then what? She would be a fugitive, her multi-million dollar contract would be voided, and Vanguard Enterprises would be left vulnerable to the syndicate. She couldn't fight him physically. She had to fight him psychologically. "Six..." Alvaro’s gaze dropped to her lips, a predatory calculation in his stormy gray eyes. He was enjoying this. He was a man who thrived on stripping away control from everyone around him. "I am a private risk-mitigation contractor," Elena finally said, her voice completely devoid of the trembling, high-pitched fragility she had faked just moments ago. It was flat, cold, and entirely professional. Alvaro paused. The countdown stopped. The corner of his mouth twitched, forming the ghost of a dark, satisfied smirk. "A private risk-mitigation contractor," he repeated slowly, tasting the syllables as if they were a fine, bitter wine. "That is a very polite, corporate euphemism for a mercenary, Elena. Who is paying you to fetch my coffee?" "I was hired through a blind proxy," Elena lied flawlessly, weaving the half-truth into a believable narrative. She could never reveal that his own Board of Directors had hired her behind his back. "My firm was contracted two days ago. A massive sum was wired into an offshore escrow account with one singular directive: keep Alexander Alvaro breathing until the Tokyo merger is finalized. That is the extent of my knowledge, and the absolute limit of my mission." Alvaro stared at her, his eyes searching hers for any micro-expression of deceit. The heavy, suffocating tension in the room seemed to shift. He didn't step back, but the immediate, primal threat of physical violence slowly ebbed away, replaced by something much more complicated and dangerous. "A blind proxy," Alvaro murmured, his grip on her arm finally loosening. "Someone wants me alive long enough to sign the Sterling acquisition papers. How touching." He finally took a step back, giving Elena the space to breathe. She instantly straightened her posture, her demeanor shifting from a terrified secretary to the lethal operative she truly was. She ignored her torn cardigan and the blood trailing down her forearm, holding his gaze with unflinching defiance. "My presence here is a necessity, sir," Elena stated, her tone strictly business. "The threat against your life is escalating. A sniper taking a shot in broad daylight in the financial district means they are getting desperate. You need me." "I need a shadow to protect me?" Alvaro scoffed, turning away from her to walk toward the concealed doorway leading to his private executive suite. "I built this empire by destroying my enemies, not by hiding behind a woman in a cheap cardigan." "With respect, Mr. Alvaro, you didn't see the sniper," Elena countered sharply, refusing to back down. "Your empire will crumble in a day if a bullet tears through your skull. Let me do my job." Alvaro stopped at the doorway. He turned his head slightly, his profile sharp against the dim lighting of his private suite. "Come here." Elena hesitated. "Sir?" "Your arm is bleeding on my thousand-dollar carpet," Alvaro said coldly. "In my suite. Now." Entering a billionaire's private quarters just minutes after an assassination attempt went against every security protocol Elena had ever been taught, but she couldn't afford to lose the fragile ground she had just gained. She stepped carefully over the broken glass and followed him into the hidden room. The private suite was a stark contrast to the ruined office. It was a haven of dark wood, leather, and dim, warm lighting. Alvaro was already standing by a sleek marble counter, opening a highly sophisticated, military-grade trauma kit. "Sit," he commanded, pointing to a leather lounger. Elena sat down rigidly. She expected him to hand her the antiseptic and bandages, but instead, Alvaro crouched down in front of her. He took her injured arm in his large hands. The sudden, intimate contact sent an involuntary jolt through her system. "I can do it myself," Elena said quietly, trying to pull her arm back. "Hold still," Alvaro ordered, his voice dropping to that dangerous, velvet register. He didn't ask again. With agonizing slowness, he rolled up the torn sleeve of her cardigan. He poured an antiseptic solution onto a piece of sterile gauze. "This will sting." Before Elena could brace herself, he pressed the gauze against the deep gash on her forearm. She hissed through her teeth, her muscles tensing violently, but she didn't pull away. Alvaro looked up at her through his thick lashes, his gray eyes darkening as he watched her suppress the pain. There was a profound, deeply unsettling contradiction in the way his large, powerful hands—hands that had just pinned her to the floor with lethal intent—were now treating her wound with meticulous, almost gentle precision. "You didn't scream when the window shattered," Alvaro noted quietly, his thumb lightly brushing the unmarred skin just below her cut as he applied a butterfly bandage. "You didn't hesitate. You threw yourself into the line of fire for a man you don't even know." "It's my job," Elena replied, her voice slightly breathless, betrayed by the terrifying proximity of him. The scent of his cedar cologne was intoxicating, clouding her usually razor-sharp senses. "Is that all it is?" Alvaro asked, his gaze dropping to her lips once more. He tied off the bandage with practiced ease. "Just a contract?" "Yes." Alvaro let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated in the quiet room. He slowly stood up, towering over her once again. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, encrypted smartphone, tossing it onto her lap. "Then consider your previous contract terminated," Alvaro stated, his tone suddenly shifting back to the ruthless CEO. Elena frowned, looking at the phone and then up at him. "You can't do that. The escrow account—" "I don't care about your proxy's escrow account," Alvaro interrupted, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. His eyes were utterly devoid of warmth. "If you are going to operate in my building, breathe my air, and stand in my shadows, you work exclusively for me. You answer to no one else. If you try to report to your blind proxy, I will find out, and I will ruin you. Do we have an understanding, Elena?" Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. He was cutting her off from the Board of Directors. He was taking complete ownership of her mission. She had no choice but to agree if she wanted to stay close to him. "Understood," Elena lied smoothly. "Good," Alvaro said, stepping back and buttoning his suit jacket. "Because your first task as my personal operative begins immediately." "What is the task?" Elena asked, standing up, her professional mask firmly back in place. Alvaro walked over to the minibar and poured himself two fingers of amber whiskey. He took a slow sip, his stormy eyes locking onto hers through the crystal glass. "The sniper who just took that shot wasn't a hired gun from a rival syndicate," Alvaro said quietly, dropping a bombshell that made Elena's blood run cold. "How could you possibly know that?" Elena asked, her brow furrowing in confusion. Alvaro lowered his glass, a ruthless, terrifying smile curving his lips. "Because the man who organized this assassination attempt is currently sitting on my own Board of Directors. And tomorrow night in Tokyo, you are going to help me destroy him."
