I will never forgive myself if anything happens to you when I know there was a chance to give you and Lincoln a better life.
Lisa's eyes filled with tears. “My daughter...”
She cupped Hazel's face.
“You are the bravest person I know. But the palace, there are secrets there, Hazel. Things I've never told you.”
“You don't have to do this, the palace is not safe.”
“I'm coming with you, sis,” Lincoln blurted out.
“No, you are not. You will have to stay and watch over Mom till I come back.”
“But …”
“There is no but, okay! Look, promise me you will do as I say?”
The atmosphere was already getting tense. Hazel's mom couldn't stop crying and kept telling her not to go. Lincoln was already on the verge of tears.
Lincoln sniffs “Alright, sis, I promise you.”
“Right then, it is settled. I will leave for the palace first thing in the morning.”
Hazel nodded, but her heart was beating faster.
She did not know what secrets waited behind the palace walls.
She only knew she had to leave.
As night fell, the little hut grew quiet. Hazel packed her things while Lincoln watched her nervously. Tomorrow, she would walk toward the palace, unaware that someone there already knew she was coming. And whatever awaited her beyond those gates might never let her return home the same.
