Hazel hands trembled as she smoothed her mother's hair. Three months. Three months of watching her mother waste away, and no healer in the village could help. The sickness wasn't natural, Hazel felt it. It was like something was draining her mother's life.
Lincoln counted two gold coins and tossed them to the table.
“Here, we can use this to get some medicine for mom.”
“Really! This won't even get half of the medicine that we need for mom's treatment,” said Hazel. “Then what do you suggest we do?” Lincoln snapped.
“Mom is dying!” he cried out.
There is hunger, fever and silence.
Then Hazel stood up suddenly. She moved near the window staring out at the deep blue sky. What she said next shocked everyone to their bones.
“I'm going to the palace,” she blurted out. The atmosphere in the room froze, it felt like time had stopped. The words hung in the room like a curse.
“Nooooo,” Lisa exclaimed weakly.
Lincoln laughed sarcastically. “Sister, you are nuts!”
“Are you crazy! Haven't you heard the rumors surrounding the palace? That place is cursed!!” he blurted out angrily.
“But what can we do? Mother is dying! She needs treatment.
Suddenly, nobody spoke. The palace was their only hope.
