Her knees ached, pressed hard against the freezing stone floor of the pack house kitchen. The harsh smell of bleach stung her nose, but Leila kept her head down, scrubbing a stubborn grease stain until her knuckles turned white. She was Leila Seinfeld. And in the Blackwood pack, that name meant absolutely nothing. She was an omega, resting comfortably at the bottom of the pack ranks. Her daily life consisted of working herself to death, surviving on scraps, and swallowing the endless disrespect thrown her way. While the rest of the pack trained, hunted, and formed bonds, she was confined to the shadows, expected to clean up their messes and stay out of sight. "Missed a spot, omega." A heavy boot kicked her bucket of dirty water. It tipped over, a grey puddle flooding across the stones she had just spent an hour drying. Leila didn't look up because she knew the voice. It was Jax, one of the younger, crueler warriors. His friends snickered behind him, leaning against the doorframe. "Clean it up before the ceremony starts," Jax sneered, stepping intentionally into the puddle and tracking muddy footprints across the floor. "If the main hall smells like your wet-dog stench tonight, the Alpha will have you thrown in the cells." Leila bit the inside of her cheek hard enough to taste copper. "Yes, Jax," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. They laughed again, a harsh, grating sound, before walking away. She grabbed her rag, her fingers numb from the cold water, and started wiping up the mess. Her muscles screamed in protest. She had been awake since three in the morning, preparing massive cuts of meat, hauling firewood, and scrubbing the common areas. Every inch of her body felt bruised and exhausted. Heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, and her heart did a familiar, pathetic little leap. It was her adoptive father. He was an Alpha himself, a respected and wealthy man who had been kind enough to take her in when she was just a stray pup. Before she came of age, he used to buy her dresses and read her stories. For a long time, she thought he actually loved her. She thought she had a real family. But the moment she presented as a weak, wolf-less omega, everything changed. She became a stain on his reputation. He walked into the kitchen, his expensive ceremonial robes brushing the damp floor. He stopped and looked at the overturned bucket. He looked at Jax's muddy footprints. And then, he looked at her, kneeling in the dirty water with a soaked rag in her hands. Her chest tightened. Just once, she wanted him to say something. She wanted him to tell them to stop, to use his rank to protect her like a father should. Instead, his eyes slid away. He adjusted his silver collar, turned on his heel, and walked out without saying a single word. He turned a blind eye to her suffering, just like he did every single day, acting like it simply wasn't happening. The silence he left behind cut deeper than Jax’s taunts ever could. It was a cold, suffocating reminder of how truly alone she was. She swallowed the heavy lump in her throat, wrung out the rag, and kept scrubbing. She didn't have the luxury of crying. By nightfall, the entire territory was vibrating with restless energy. Tonight was the Full Moon Ceremony. It was the most important night of the year, a sacred time when the Moon Goddess supposedly blessed the pack. More importantly, it was the night when true mates were often revealed under the peak of the moonlight. Leila stood in the shadows at the very edge of the clearing, shivering in her thin, hand-me-down dress. The autumn wind bit through the fabric, but she didn't dare move closer to the massive bonfire crackling in the center of the grounds. Omegas weren't allowed near the fire or the long wooden tables piled high with roasted meat, sweet berries, and fresh bread. They were meant to stay invisible. They were meant to watch the higher-ranking wolves celebrate while they blended into the dark trees. The scent of the feast made her stomach rumble painfully, but she ignored it. She leaned against the rough bark of an oak tree and watched the crowd. Despite the exhaustion, the bruising, and the endless humiliation, a stupid, stubborn spark of hope burned in her chest. She watched the newly mated couples holding hands near the flames, their eyes bright with devotion. She watched the way they looked at each other, like the rest of the world didn't exist. Maybe tonight would be her turn. Maybe the Goddess hadn't completely forgotten her. If she could just find her mate, whoever he was, maybe she could finally leave this miserable existence behind. A mate would have to accept her. A mate would protect her. It was the only lifeline she had left to cling to. The low murmur of the crowd abruptly went dead silent. The heavy beating of the ceremonial drums faded away. Alpha Kane Blackwood stepped out onto the raised wooden platform overlooking the bonfire. He was massive, ruthless, and radiated a terrifying amount of raw power. His dark hair caught the golden firelight, and his sharp, arrogant jawline was set in stone. He commanded the absolute submission of everyone in the clearing without even having to speak a word. He was the pride of the pack, a fierce leader who tolerated zero weakness. Leila kept her eyes lowered, staring at the dirt, just like the rest of the omegas. They were not worthy of looking directly at the Alpha. Then, the wind changed direction. It hit her like a physical blow to the chest. A scent so intoxicating, so overwhelmingly powerful, that her lungs seized. It smelled like crushed pine needles, dark earth, and a crackling winter thunderstorm. It bypassed her senses and went straight to her blood. Her inner wolf, who usually curled up silently and fearfully in the dark, suddenly slammed against her ribs. Mate. Leila gasped, her hands flying to her chest as a fierce, burning heat bloomed over her heart. The pull was magnetic, it was an absolute, undeniable demand. It dragged her gaze up from the dirt, pulling her through the massive crowd of bodies, past the raging bonfire, and straight up to the wooden platform. Straight to Alpha Kane. He went completely rigid. He stopped moving, his large hands gripping the wooden railing so hard the thick timber groaned under his strength. His head snapped in her direction with lethal speed. Across a hundred feet of firelight, smoke, and pack members, their eyes locked. The bond clicked into place with a deafening roar in her mind. The air in her lungs vanished. Her knees almost buckled under the sheer weight of the connection. She found out in that exact moment that the man standing on the platform, the proud, untouchable, and ruthless leader of their pack, was her fated mate. For a split second, she saw her own pure shock mirrored in his dark, storm-grey eyes. She saw his chest heave as the scent hit him, too. He knew. They both knew. Then, the realization rippled through the clearing. The pack members nearest to her noticed the Alpha's intense, frozen stare. They followed his gaze, turning their heads to see what had captured his attention. The whispers started immediately, cutting through the quiet night air. "Why is he looking at her?" "Is she out of her mind? An omega?" "She smells like bleach and dirt." They stepped away from her, parting like the sea, leaving Leila standing completely alone in the shadows, entirely exposed. A collective, horrified gasp swept through the pack. Everyone present was utterly shocked. The silence that followed the whispers was heavy, suffocating, and thick with open disgust. They looked at her; the filthy, overworked omega in a ragged dress and then looked back at their powerful Alpha. Leila stood frozen, her heart pounding a frantic, desperate rhythm against her ribs, staring up at her mate. She waited for him to speak. She waited for her life to finally change.
