10 Blinking in the darkness, Fina shook her torch. “Blast it. The blessed machine won’t turn on.” “Let me feel the wall to see if there’s a light switch,” said Ruby. Soon, the cellar was bathed in a faint glow that did nothing to counter the deep, damp chill in the air. Off to one side stood a few wine racks. In the other corner stood a shelf with preserves and various jars of pickles. A jar of raspberry jam was calling Fina’s name, but she ignored it. “There’s a small room over there.” Fina pointed to a door with peeling paint. It looked as if it hadn’t been opened in years.
