A Proposal of Convenience
Jessica's eyes met James' across the desk, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she tried to read his expression. Was he genuinely interested in helping her family, or was there something more sinister at play?
James leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together as he regarded her. "So, Miss Langley," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I understand that your family is in a bit of a financial bind."
Jessica nodded, feeling a flush rise to her cheeks. "Yes, that's true," she admitted. "My father's company went bankrupt, and we're struggling to make ends meet."
James nodded sympathetically. "I see. Well, I'm willing to help you out. But I need something in return."
Jessica's heart sank. She had been afraid of this. "What do you want?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
James smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "I want you to marry me," he said, his voice dripping with confidence.
Jessica felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Marry him? Was he insane?
"Why?" she asked, trying to stall for time.
James leaned forward, his eyes burning with intensity. "Because I need a wife," he said. "Someone to help me navigate the complexities of high society. And I think you'd be perfect for the job."
Jessica felt a wave of revulsion wash over her. This was a proposal of convenience, nothing more. James didn't care about her or her family; he just wanted to use her for his own gain.
But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that gave her pause. A glimmer of vulnerability, perhaps, or a hint of desperation.
Whatever it was, it made her hesitate. Maybe, just maybe, there was more to James Parker than met the eye.
"What's in it for me?" she asked, trying to sound confident.
James smiled again, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh, I think you'll find the benefits of being my wife to be quite... substantial," he said, his voice dripping with innuendo.
Jessica felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized what he was implying. But she pushed the feeling aside, reminding herself that she was doing this for her family.
"Okay," she said finally, her voice firm. "I'll do it."
James' face lit up with a triumphant smile. "Excellent," he said, standing up and walking around the desk. "I'll have my lawyers draw up the papers. We can get married as soon as possible."
Jessica felt a wave of panic wash over her as she realized what she had just agreed to. She was going to marry a man she barely knew, a man who seemed to be hiding secrets and motives of his own.
But it was too late now. She had made her decision, and she would have to live with the consequences.
