Rosie’s smile lit up her face as I walked into the bakery. “Your usual?”
“Yes, please.” My face was definitely unlit but I attempted to push a smile onto it. “And I’ll have a slice of the chocolate fudge cake.”
“Instead of the caramel slice?”
“As well as.” The smile began to slip.
“Cream or ice-cream?”
“Both.” Total smile failure.
Rosie tilted her head to one side then reached into the cabinet and slid a large slice of cake onto a plate. “Where’s that handsome man you brought in here the other day?”
I bit my bottom lip to stop it quivering.
She laid the plate on the counter and began preparing my coffee. She glanced up, meeting my eye, then turned off the machine and came around the counter. “Oh, sweetie.” Her strong arms enveloped me in a warm embrace.
