Miho: Parental FailuresThough I’d agreed with Taka’s plan to appear repentant so my parents would feel they could leave, it grew increasingly difficult. I missed having dinner with my boys; I missed the hours spent in the hideout after school. Even when we’d just sat there doing our homework, it was better being with them than being alone. My house felt emptier now than it ever had when it was just me. My parents seemed to be going through great lengths to avoid being in the same room with each other. Other than that first night, I hadn’t heard them arguing or seen them talking to each other. My dad was sleeping in the living room on a futon while my mom had their bedroom. Neither seemed interested in talking to me either. Those lengthy bouts of silence threatened to break down the walls
