Chapter ThreePia yawned as she shifted the canvas satchel on her shoulder. It had been another long night delivering a baby, but if she didn’t get to the market early, there’d be nothing remaining on the shelves. She yanked open the door to the shop located a few blocks from home. The tiny store was packed with women of all ages, grasping and shoving to fill their bags with food items. Behind the wooden counter, her friend Trudy sat on a stool, a look of contentment on her face despite the mayhem. Her arms rested on her protruding belly, the most likely reason for the aura of peace surrounding her. Outside, the muffled sound of marching feet rumbled on the pavement.
