Dieter shielded Pia with his good arm.
Her eyes widened, fear draining the color in her porcelain face.
She ducked her head, and he pulled her close, his breath hitching at the floral scent that clung to her silky hair. She trembled against his shoulder, and he tightened his hold around her. “This way.” He led her to the steel cage he’d constructed shortly after returning home. “Not exactly regulation, but it has kept me safe thus far.”
He coughed, his lungs clogged with particles. With a tug, he opened the door, and they rushed inside. He slammed the door, the latch catching with a loud click. “Hopefully, this raid won’t go on much longer.” Dieter gestured to a pair of wooden chairs. “Would you like to sit?”
