RetreatEven down the stairs, these nightbringers kept pace with us. The floors flew by, a blur of purple objects. “There!” Bri shouted. “Chase, Hayyan, help me with this!” His panga pointed to a large stone relief propped against the wall. We sprinted over, grabbed it, and dragged it to the stairs. We placed it against them just as the horde of black, red, and grey pressed up against it. The golem looked at the relief blindly, as though it were another part of the tower that it simply had to maneuver around. But there was no space to do so. It paced on the step above the relief.
