Hosea Bethea recalled the rainy, windy night they laid his sister Belinda to rest. He sat beside his mama while she sang hymns, stifled her grief and stroked his hair intermittently. Only her little boy remained on the earth, her skinny, scrawny little boy, who would probably die a nobody, but she would never tell him that. Hosea knew that's what she thought and could not help but agree. He checked his watch, sighed and brushed away a drop.
