And even as late as 1889, when U.S., German and British warships squared off for a battle in the harbor of Samoa, threatening a major international crisis, a devastating hurricane struck, sinking all of them and damaging even more merchant vessels. Suddenly, all of the belligerents had to work as one. Polynesians saved American and German sailors alike, often at the risk of their own lives. Before hostilities could begin again, the Treaty of Berlin was signed guaranteeing the freedom of Samoa.
