More Than Just Wi-Fi

The hallway fell silent. Alexander’s words lingered in the air. “She’s the reason I came here tonight.” Victoria looked from Alexander to Isabella, then back to Alexander. “…Seriously?” Alexander nodded toward Isabella’s router inside the apartment. “She changed the Wi-Fi password.” Victoria stared at him for a moment before laughing. “You dragged me here… because of Wi-Fi?” “I came to apologize.” “For stealing someone’s internet?” “I prefer borrowing.” Victoria rolled her eyes dramatically. “I can’t believe you.” For the first time since opening the door, Isabella smiled. Maybe this wasn’t as awkward as she thought. Victoria noticed the smile. Then, for the first time, she really looked at Isabella. From her oversized sweatshirt… To her fluffy slippers… To the loose bun holding her hair together. Victoria smiled politely. It was the kind of smile that never reached her eyes. “So…” “You’re the girl who lives across the street.” Isabella nodded. “Yes.” “I’ve seen you before.” “You have?” Victoria smiled. “It’s hard not to.” She turned to Alexander. “You never mentioned your neighbor.” Alexander shrugged. “It never came up.” Victoria’s smile faded for the briefest second. She knew Alexander. He barely noticed people. Yet somehow… He knew who the girl across the street was. Interesting. She stepped closer to Isabella. “I’m Victoria.” “Isabella.” “It’s nice to meet you.” “You too.” Victoria studied her face for another second. She wasn’t glamorous. She wasn’t wearing expensive clothes. She looked… ordinary. Victoria couldn’t understand why Alexander had come here himself instead of sending one of the house staff. “We should go,” she said. Alexander nodded. Before leaving, he looked at Isabella. “I’ll pay you back.” “You don’t have to.” “I insist.” “You really don’t.” He smiled. “I’ll think of something.” Their eyes met for only a second. But Victoria noticed. Every second of it. She slipped her arm through Alexander’s. “Come on.” “We’re late.” Alexander gently removed her hand. “I’ll walk you downstairs.” Victoria forced another smile. “Of course.” As they walked away, Isabella quietly closed her apartment door. She leaned against it. “What… was that?” Across the street… Victoria and Alexander entered the mansion. The moment the front doors closed, Victoria stopped walking. “So…” Alexander looked at her. “So?” “You’ve changed.” He frowned. “I’ve apologized for stealing Wi-Fi.” “No.” She folded her arms. “You smiled.” Alexander looked confused. “I always smile.” “Not like that.” Silence. Victoria stepped closer. “Do you like her?” Alexander let out a quiet laugh. “I’ve spoken to her for less than fifteen minutes.” “That’s not what I asked.” He didn’t answer. Instead, he walked toward the staircase. “Goodnight, Victoria.” She watched him disappear upstairs. The smile she’d been wearing all evening vanished. A maid approached cautiously. “Miss Victoria?” Victoria’s voice was cold. “I want everything you can find on the girl across the street.” The maid blinked. “Everything?” “Her university.” “Her friends.” “Her family.” “Everything.” “By tomorrow morning.” “Yes, Miss Victoria.” Victoria looked toward the large windows overlooking Isabella’s apartment. “So…” She whispered to herself. “Let’s see what makes you so interesting.” The next morning… Isabella walked into the university with Emma. Emma nudged her shoulder. “You’ve been smiling since breakfast.” “I have not.” “You even hummed in the shower.” “I did not!” “You absolutely did.” Before Isabella could deny it again, a sleek black sports car pulled into the campus parking lot. Students immediately gathered around it. Girls whispered excitedly. “It’s Alexander!” “He actually came today!” Alexander stepped out of the car. As usual, every eye followed him. He ignored the crowd. Instead… He looked across the courtyard. Straight at Isabella. Then… To everyone’s surprise… He started walking toward her. Emma’s eyes nearly popped out. “Oh my God…” “He’s coming here.” Isabella’s heartbeat quickened. “No…” “Maybe he’s not.” But he didn’t stop. Five steps away… Four… Three… Two… He finally stood in front of her. He smiled. “Good morning, Isabella.” Before she could answer— A hand suddenly wrapped around Alexander’s arm. Victoria. She looked at Isabella and smiled sweetly. Then she turned to Alexander and said loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear— “Darling… aren’t you forgetting to kiss me good morning?”
