Adam rolled over on the bed, prying his eyes open. The room was a blinding white with wooden accents on the furniture and the wall. Where was he again? Creases formed on his forehead as he tried to recall the events of last night.
Flashes of coloured lights…loud music…alcohol. He’d seen some hot chick standing alone. He remembered kissing her.
He turned and stared at the lady beside him. Right. He was at the club. Where else would he go on a Friday night? The girl moaned and lifted her hand onto his chest. He scrunched his nose, picking up her hand with two fingers and flinging it aside. He knew they’d agreed to hook up, and he’d spent the night over her. But, something about someone else just touching him, put him off. He had to give the girl credit though. She really gave him a good time last night. For the first time in a long time.
He wished he could just properly get more shuteye time, but he was Adam Mayers, a business man and the CEO of his company. Sleep wasn’t an option when money needed to be made. He swung his feet over the side of the bed and hunched over himself, rolling his shoulder and loosening his stiff bones. He began to dress up. Midway through buttoning his shirt, his phone dinged with a message.
His ever-trusty assistant had sent him his schedule for the day. What would he do without an assistant? Yes, he was the CEO and he’d successfully grown the business into one of the leading companies in the country, plugging in to the weight loss industry. But he was such a messy and disorganized person. The only thing he was confident of, was organizing a file of the list of girls he had s*x with. Somehow, he loved keeping count.
He looked at the girl on his bed with a smirk. He was going to name this one, Tiger.
Before he could finally step out the door, his ringtone blasted through the room. An unknown number stared at him from his screen. Based on professionalism and security, he usually ignored unknown numbers. If anyone wanted to speak to him, they had to go through his assistant and set up an appointment. He didn’t have time for frivolities. Well, except women.
He stared at the phone until the ringing stopped. Adam was a man of rules and protocol. But why did he feel he should’ve answered the call? The screen lit up again, ringing with the same number.
“Hello?’’ He said, waiting.
“Hello, am I speaking with Mr. Adam Mayers?”
This better be good. He thought.
“Yes, how may I help you?”
“I’m calling from the Zang Jair hospital. This is to inform you that your Mr. Peter Mayers collapsed last night and is hospitalized at the moment.”
He didn’t wait for the speaker to finish. He dashed out of the room, downstairs, into his car. His grandfather had collapsed. And where was he? In a hotel with some random lady.
His grandfather had collapsed!
Oh my God.
Adam had known his grandfather as far back as he could remember. He was the only family he had. He was the only one that stayed. If not for his grandfather, he’d be nothing. Probably dead or rotting somewhere.
Adam had always feared it. Anytime the thought came, he fought so hard to dispel it. But the truth was glaring, his grandfather was no longer the young man he knew. He was getting old with each passing day and his body was shutting down. He knew he would have to face this reality sooner or later, but he didn’t think it would be so soon. He was yet to make his grandfather proud. He just starting flying high, he’d not even achieved half of all the future plans he had for himself and his company. Why was it when he was finally succeeding that the man he cherished most in the world was at the brink of death.
Death? No. He shouldn’t think that. His grandfather just collapsed. Nothing more or less. It had to be. His grip on the steering wheel tightened and his feet pressed onto the accelerator.
Once he pushed through the hospital entrance, a massive wave of disinfectant and some chemicals, claimed his sense of smell. He found his way to the reception.
“Adam Mayers. Here for my grandfather.”
The receptionist briefly looked up and typed something.
“He’s at the intensive care unit. First floor by your right. Room 2B”
Adam bounded upstairs and rushed into the room. The sight that greeted him, stopped him in his tracks. Different tubes branched out, connecting to different places on his grandfather’s body. A machine beeped behind the bedframe and he watched the nurse inject something into his grandfather’s arm.
It was just too much to take in. He took a deep breath and walked forward cautiously.
“How is he?”
The nurse looked up. “Adam?”
He nodded.
“He’s been talking about you all day.” She gave him a warm motherly smile. He felt uncomfortable under her gaze and looked away.
“So, he’s fine then?”
She sighed and her eyes looked like she knew something he didn’t. She placed a hand on his shoulder and said, “Take care of him.”
As she left, a doctor came in, looking to be in his sixties. “Hello.”
Adam stood up to give the man a firm handshake. “You’re his grandson?”
“Yes. How is he please? What’s the problem?”
The doctor took one look at his grandfather. He looked so peaceful with his eyes closed, oblivious to the chaos of the world around him.
“So far, his vitals are okay. You might want to come to my office to have a seat and hear the rest of it.”
Adam stared into the eyes of his doctor and perceived within the very depths of his heart, that something was very wrong. And he was scared to know what.
