I'm running through the mountains. My large white paws crushing through the few inches of snow, cold wind running through my thick fun. My breathing is steady, but I am running as fast as I can, and I don't know why. The unfamiliar environment is whirling past me. I hear something behind me, I must be running from someone or something. Suddenly, I am surrounded by thick trees, the snow is slowly starting to come down. I look down as my paws move as fast as they can. When I looked back up for my next move, I slid to a stop to see a huge, pure white wolf looking at me. It stands still as I come to a stop only inches away. Its bright silver eyes look into my soul. I can hear others coming to us, but that doesn't matter anymore. Now, as I stood in front of this pure white, beautiful wolf, I noticed the little tuff of black around its left eye. It almost looks like the shadow of a crescent moon. I stare at its bright silver eyes, the others have caught up to stand behind us, but I feel safe. Something inside me is telling me not to run anymore. Something tells me this wolf in front of me is my mate.
"Parker! Parker get up!" I heard a voice in the distance. That's odd. It sounds like Cathy. "Parker, I need to get the meat out of the freezer. Honey, you need to get up." s**t. I must have fallen asleep in the freezer again. She shakes my arm aggressively, Artemis growls in my head. Outside bad. Freezer good. Artemis has been with me for three years now and I still can't get her to stop complaining about the Redwood sun. Especially since we were able to fully turn on my sixteenth birthday. The whole pack, including my father and Paul, were speechless when Artemis transformed. Both my father and brother were massive, dark gray alpha wolves with bright yellow eyes; yet here me and Artemis stood, pure white with the brightest blue eyes anyone has seen, with a black tuft of fur in the shape of a crescent moon next to the right eye.
Before Artemis and I could fully transform, I would hunt with Paul with a bow and arrow to keep my human skills sharp. I managed to graduate with honors and set the school record for highest accuracy on a target. I would hunt small game like rabbits, squirrels, and birds. I never killed for sport. Artemis had this thing about it, something about how cruel it was to take away some other creatures’ resources when the pack has plenty. She would make exceptions when there was a pack hunt, and we would store the meat I killed in the freezer for a pack celebration.
The forest surrounding Redwood gave us a plethora of opportunities for wild game and Artemis was always so excited to go hunting in her wolf form. “I am a fearless and exceptional hunter, and I will be the best in the pack.” She would state as a matter-of-factly. However, those chances got taken away the day we transformed into a white wolf. Father was too worried about other packs and rouges trying to use me for breeding purposes and it also didn’t help that in the forest and grasslands around us, our fur stuck out like a sore thumb. Father had forbidden me to hunt alone and in most seasons. We were only lucky to do so when, on the off chance, the snow stuck to the ground. And I must say, Artemis is in fact a very skilled hunter.
"Parker, honey, tell Artemis to watch where she nests. She almost put paw marks on my dinner rolls!” Cathy states with a little annoyance. Artemis has made the freezer her den in the summer, but luckily, we don’t have to hide in the freezer for much longer. Tell that woman not to put dinner rolls next to my bed! Artemis does not like to leave the freezer willingly. "We need these dinner rolls for Paul's ceremony tomorrow, so maybe you guys should find another room to freeze out for tonight. Can't go messing with traditional dinner for the new alpha's ceremony!" She hums. Tomorrow was Paul's big day to take the pack from father, everything needed to be perfect so dad could finally have some peace. He and dad have been alpha training non-stop after my little incident three years ago. Paul and I are still close, but I know I put the pack at risk by showing Alpha Brian and Alex my powers, and I know that takes a hard toll on both Paul and dad.
Keeping the pack safe is a top priority and after Alpha Brian took Alex away, attacks on the pack have almost doubled. We were still the largest pack in the south, close to 1300 pack members and with at least 700 of them being warriors, the attacks were less than challenging. But nonetheless, attacks should not be happening at all. Alpha Brian threatened dad that he would challenge him for the alpha title and that he would lock me away so that only he and Alex could use me. Shortly after that outburst, dad was able to convince the other alphas in the bordering territories that Brian and Alex were no longer allowed to attend the alpha meetings and any treaties with the Red Moon pack would be severed. No one has seen Alpha Brain or Alex for a few years now, but sometimes when I am out on the grounds in the winter nights, I swear I am being followed by those black eyes. Red Moon territory is only 20 miles from the Crescent Moon borders with a human neighborhood in between the two packs and Alex being so close still makes my skin crawl.
I reluctantly leave the freezer so Cathy can start preparing for tomorrow. I headed upstairs to the third floor of the pack house, the alpha and beta suites, so I could go lay down in my bed. I walked into my room and saw Paul sitting on my bed looking at my architect design book. Paul and I graduated high school but that meant I needed to withhold my end of the bargain. Paul was trying to protest our father for me because I did have my powers under more control thanks to Artemis. But dad was adamant on shipping me off.
I look at my twin brother, and at nineteen, Paul would be the youngest alpha to take over a pack and I can already see the burden weighing on his shoulders. He hasn't found his mate yet, but he being a brick house, I would assume it won't be long. At 6'3, wide shoulders, a complete six pack and short brown hair with bright green eyes, my brother made my king bed look like a twin. "Well Par, this is it huh?" He puts the notebook down and looks at me. "Tomorrow, I get the pack, but I lose you."
The day after Paul's ceremony, I was to be shipped out to my new dorm room... in Northwest Taiga. I told you we were going to move to the tundra. Taiga is not the tundra, Artemis. I can see her wolf smile in my head, she knows she won the argument about where to go to school. It may not be the tundra, but it does get a lot of cold weather, and cold weather was all Artemis needed to hear to decide which college to go to. I was looking forward to being part of one of the most prestigious architecture schools known around the world and not having to isolate myself in a freezer all year round sounded like a nice change of scenery.
But looking at Paul sitting on my bed, in my room that is filled with boxes, leaving for the next four years was pulling at my heart. I have much more control over my powers now, but I am still a liability to my pack. I stood there in the doorway, playing with my wolf pendant necklace. Father had found a witch, Hecate, who cast a spell that whenever I wore the necklace, my powers would dull, and my wolf smell would be undetectable from any other werewolf. I didn’t need to wear it yet, but I needed to get used to the change in power to blend into an all-human college. Artemis says it doesn’t make her feel weakened, she just didn’t find the “ironic” sense of humor the witch had to place the spell on a wolf charm.
"You're going to be a great architect." Paul suddenly says, flipping through my design book.
"You're going to be a great alpha."
"When you graduate, you're coming back here, and you can design the new elementary school." We have taken in more pack members the last few years, and werewolves are known for having pups as soon as the mating bond snaps into place. The old elementary school hadn't been updated in 50 years and the poor little ones were running out of room.
Paul stands up and rushes over for a hug. He towers over me and rests his chin on my head. Me, standing at 5'5, can't even link my fingers together when trying to hug back over his broad shoulders. My long blonde hair still runs down to my bubble butt, but my mother was right when I turned sixteen, my C-cup breasts finally gave me all the right curves. I was able to still train with the warriors in the early mornings, so my toned legs are added to my list of features I like about myself with my blue eyes.
Paul and I were still embraced with our sibling hug when we got a mink link from dad, in full alpha command "Border under attack, everyone to their posts!" Paul and I quickly push each other away and run down the three flights of stairs and out the door. There was chaos everywhere. Warriors try to gather all the women and children to get to the bunker. Not too long after we stepped outside, my trusty bodyguard, Robert, was by my side per orders from the alpha. Robert has been my shadow since I was fifteen, after I showed my powers. He was a very tall, tree-like man, built to take hits but only had to give one blow to stop anyone in his path, with little to no sense of humor. Paul runs off to get to the front of the fight with dad and the warriors and I try to go with him, but Robert grabs my wrist and pulls me towards the house. I tried to protest but I got nowhere. I am basically dragged to my very own personal bunker. I had my very own room in the freezer section but with a passcode that could be locked from the inside.
Robert throws me in the freezer vault and slams the door and uses his keypad on the outside to lock it. At least we can get away from the heat. Artemis really? Our pack is under attack and all you want to do is lay down in the freezer? Warriors can take care of it, they always do. We shouldn't be locked away, how am I supposed to defend myself in Taiga if I can't go fight with my pack? I will take care of you, little one. Hush now. Paul will be back soon. I sure hope so.
For what feels like hours, I am left in the freezer. I can't mindlink anyone, I don't want to distract them, but it is odd how long this fight has lasted. I go back and forth trying to decide if I should reach out to someone when I hear the keypad on the other side of the door start to beep my numerical passcode. I sigh in relief, but when the door opens, I am frozen in place and my heart stops. I looked into the eyes of a very tall, black-haired, black-eyed man. How did he find me? How did he know the passcode? Why is he here? My mind is racing. Artemis is growling. My palms start to heat up, but I can tell the heat is coming through all the way. He says nothing. He stands there, taking me in. I haven't seen him in four years and here we are, at almost the exact same spot; the spot where I threw him out of the freezer with a blistered cheek.
He smiles that same smug smile. He hadn't changed at all, apart from growing 7 inches and getting a good muscular build, his hair was slicked back, and he stood there almost completely blocking the doorway to get the hell away from him. He looks at me up and down, stopping at my chest, and his eyes go completely black again. He growls in approval at how I have developed over the years.
"Miss me?"
Not yet, asshole. Artemis is growling and threatening to come out. My fists are clenched, my nails digging into my palms. I'm ready this time. I have a much better aim now and his big head sure makes a nice target. I look into his black eyes and that smile never leaves. That’s it, time for some payback. Artemis starts to take over and next thing I know, I go in for a smack to the check just like last time. Only this time he was quicker. He grabs my wrist and snaps it behind my back and spins me around. Artemis howls in pain and retreats from my mind, my heart sinks as her warmth leaves my body. My back is now slammed against his cheek and my neck is inches away from his mouth. He moves us in towards the wall of the freezer and pins me against the wall. He growls loudly and I feel a bulge in my lower back. He sniffs my neck and I panic. His threat was repeated in my head from when I was fifteen. He's going to mark me, to make me his.
His canines elongated, but there was a sudden chaos and loud growling happening in the kitchen. Alex growls and he bashes my head against the freezer wall. Knocking me out. After that, I remember feeling weightless, having no control over my body, visions of my arms swinging around and nothing but the ground to look at. When I came to, I was bound and gagged and in the backseat of a speeding car. I cry out for Artemis, but she's gone. I cannot mindlink, I can't even feel my powers. I am tied up in the backseat next to Alex who is now sleeping. I start to lose consciousness again and decide to let it overcome me. I can't win right now, and I know it.
