Chapter 5

“Paul, you’re crushing me.” I’m wrapped in Paul's giant arms, him trying to squeeze the life out of me. I pounded on his back. “Paul, my shoulder!” I yelled in pain. He pulls away with an embarrassed “Sorry.” It’s roughly 2am and the whole pack house is lined up around the pathway to my car. It’s a ten-hour flight to Northwest Taiga and I knew as much as Paul wanted to drop me off, he needed to be here for the pack and it could draw too much attention. As if it wasn’t bad enough to show up with only a week until the semester started with a bruised face, my left arm in a sling and a scar on the bottom of my jaw line, showing up with my twin brother in a private jet to a human college would cause much too much attention. “I’m going to miss you so much, Par. If you need anything, call me immediately.” Paul said with a stern face but more tears in his eyes. We have never been this far apart before. For eighteen years, he and I have always been in the same house, even when he was alpha training. We gotta go, little wolf. It’s time for colder weather! Artemis is right. We needed to head to the plane. I side hugged Paul one more time, and walked down the pathway the path had left us, waving at everyone as I passed by. I got into the backseat of the car, my driver and bodyguard, Robert, in front. Robert never left my hospital room, my bedroom and I had to yell at him to leave me alone in the bathroom after I was taken. I still don’t understand how Alex knew the code, but Robert was found unconscious and bound in vines just outside the kitchen door. It was only a forty-five minute drive to the airport, but it was forty-five minutes of cold silence. For what seemed like hours, Artemis and I were finally seated on the plane. The weight of saying good-bye to everyone and getting up in the middle of the night to leave was weighing on me. I opened the window blind by my seat and rested my head against the coolness of the window. Artemis, do you remember your past lives? Alex said I “tasted” better than her last human after he assaulted me. Just the thought made me shudder and I crossed my legs. I do not remember any of my past lives, little wolf. Just the life I once knew with Orion before he died. Do you think Orion will remember? I sure hope so, little wolf. Now rest. Soon we will be feeling the cool air of a fresh start. I close my eyes and drift to sleep as the plane takes us thousands of miles away from the only place I called home. It’s pure white. The snow is dancing all around me, the wind is whipping my hair in all directions. I look up towards the sky, its bright blue color stays still as the wind blows. I close my eyes, tilt my head back and stick my tongue out to catch snowflakes. I’ve never seen or felt snow, but it was like I was in a cold shower. I’m alone and enjoying the calmness when I hear a ghostly howl in front of me. I snap my neck and open my eyes to look at the beauty in front of me. My mate, in his beautiful wolf form, was standing in front of me looking at me with his bright silver eyes. He howls again, and the wind picks up and blows over my mate's face. As the wind settles down, he stands there, but he is no longer alone. Standing before me are four other wolves, two light gray, one light brown and one looked to be a little off white with no tuft of fur around the eyes. The other four wolves bow their heads as my mate stands tall. I started to slowly walk towards him. I extend my arm and push out my palm and carefully take one step at a time. My hand almost touches the bridge of his nose, I hear him breathe deep and his eyes are closed. A huge gust of wind throws snow in my face and I take a step back. The wind clears and now in front of me is my mate, with a sword deep in his shoulder. He’s whimpering, blood coming from his mouth and it looks like a red blanket has engulfed the rest of his body. The wind suddenly stopped, the snow froze in time and Alex was standing over my mate's body, laughing a deep, cruel laugh. “You. Are. Mine.” he says, staring at me with dead, black eyes. “Miss?” Alex is still laughing, my mate dying at my feet. “Miss, you need to wake up.” I feel pressure on my shoulder. Alex bends down, still remaining eye contact with me, and snaps my mates' neck. “Miss!” My eyes snap wide open, a pair of male hands are on my shoulders. I panicked and grabbed his wrist. “Ahh!” he screamed in pain. Little wolf, we burned him. s**t. s**t. s**t. My emotions must have been too high for the necklace to mask my gift from Apollo. He stepped back holding his wrist, “Your eyes! Your eyes were glowing!” he yelled. I grab my bag and rushed past him and out of the plane. I walk down the plane steps and get blinded by bright light and blistering wind. My lips chap immediately and my lungs attempt to suck in a huge breath of air, but it’s like a brain freeze hits all at once. Now I can get used to this. Let’s go for a run! Artemis, we need to get to our room; maybe our roommate is already there. I finally got fully functional again, and walked through the airport to find a taxi. The airport is only a quick half hour ride to the college and now that I’m here, the jitters are coming to surface. I flagged down the taxi and sat in the back and breathed a huge sigh of relief. I know leaving the pack was the right thing to do and I am so excited to be going to school. Not to mention no more hiding in the freezer! Artemis is already wagging her tail and I can’t wait to see her run through the woods and play in the snow. Suddenly, the vision of my dream comes back and Alex’s lifeless black eyes are staring at me in the rear-view mirror of the taxi. I inadvertently gasped and snapped my eyes shut. “Miss, are you okay? We’re here.” The taxi driver says as he rolls to a stop in front of a very tall, elegant building. “Do you need help with your bags, miss?” he asks. He pops out of the driver's seat and opens my door for me, handing out his hand. I was about to accept his hand because the sling does make it harder to get out of the back seat, when suddenly.. NO. We will not be letting another man touch us again! Artemis throws my hand back at my side. “No thank you, sir.” I said quietly. I hop out of the backseat, pay him and grab my phone to bring up the email to know where my room is. I pushed the entry door open and I saw what looked to be a lobby. There are lounge chairs and a massive couch placed around a massive TV, and behind that was a small kitchenette with a fridge, a coffee pot and a popcorn maker. To the left was a pool table, more couches and another TV with what looked like a PS5 and a VR set. In front of me was a little desk with a little tiny female behind it. She looked flustered, constantly looking back and forth between numerous pieces of paper. I walked up to her to get my room key and to ask if my luggage had arrived that Paul had sent out yesterday. She was a skinny, short thing with tan skin and shoulder-length jet-black hair. She was wearing a sweater and some skinny jeans but I wondered how she wasn’t bundled up with almost no fat on her in this weather. “Excuse me.” I said in the most polite way I could. She either ignored me or didn’t hear me because she was still frantically looking between papers. “Excuse me.” I said a little louder. Let me handle this. “EXCUSE ME!” My voice is low and thick with Artemis’s dominance. She jumps and drops the papers she's holding. She slams her hands down on the desk and breathes heavily. “WHAT!?” She yells, her hazel eyes staring daggers at me. “I’m looking for my room key and to see if my luggage was here.” “Name?” she asks, clearly annoyed. “Parker Wolfe.” She looks through the computer screen and looks at me puzzled. She shrugs her shoulders and says “Sixth floor, room 637. Luggage is already in room. Roommate brought it up.” She hands over the keycard and waves her hand around telling me to get the hell out of her area. What a b***h. She better watch herself. I walk away and find myself in front of the elevator doors. I hit the six button and as soon as the door closes, it hits me that I will be living with someone. Since I was in the hospital for a week, I missed my shot at getting a single room, so I hope Artemis and I can manage to make a friend to make our living situation semi comfortable. She better not be a b***h like the one downstairs. Artemis growls. I’m sure she will be fine, Artemis. Maybe it will be like the movies and we can have a girls' night? I told her. At least one can hope, anyway. The doors open, I walk out and find my way in the right direction to our new room. My wolf hearing is picking up conversations from other rooms behind the door. It sounds like a lot of men behind those doors. Artemis’s voice has a sense of worry in it. I’m looking at the numbers on the doors and one opens up and out walks a half naked man with a towel around his waist. He takes a half step and stops and looks at me, wide-eyed. I tried to hide the shock on my face, it must be co-ed floors? I’m so close to finding my room. I rushed down the hall and fumbled with my keycard. I swipe it and push the door open. I walked into a common room with a couch, it looked like my roommate had already placed some blankets down on it. I looked right past the couch and walked towards the gigantic window in the back of the room. Jackpot. We have a beautiful view of the mountain range, it looks like some peaks have snow caps already. Just a couple hundred yards back is the deep pine-rich forest, with yellow needles mixing in the dark green. It’s beautiful and I can’t wait to explore. I turned around and saw a small TV in front of the couch and on the right side of the room is a small kitchenette with plates, pots and pans on the counter. And to my left was a door to what I’m assuming is the bedrooms. I walked in and saw two twin beds on either side of the room and a small desk along the other side of the wall. The bed to the left is already made and the desk is filled with textbooks. I casually look at the textbooks and see a lot of astronomy textbooks. Cool! My roommate must be an astrology major, maybe she knows about Orion's constellation? I see all my luggage on the bed on the right side of the room and start to go through it. The bed has some drawers that slide out under it and a small, tall dresser in between the bed and desk. I unzip the last bag and it’s all my bra and underwear. I tossed the bag to the side of the bed and sat down. Ever since Alex tied me up to a bed with silk sheets, I can’t stand the feeling of the fabric anymore. I had to go out and buy cotton bed sheets. I decided to go with a basic black comforter set, which looked nice with my roommates' navy blue one. I placed my laptop on the desk, and sat down. I decided to buy all my textbooks online so I wouldn’t have to carry them around. Need to find a doctor to get this stupid sling off. Yes, Artemis was right. The pack doctor said I needed two more weeks with it for my shoulder to completely heal. I was about to pick up the phone and call Paul to ask how the pack was doing when I heard the door knob jiggling around. I decided it would be nice to greet my roommate in the kitchenette with a cup of coffee, so I headed out as she was walking through the door. The door opens and my roommate steps inside. My eyes first go to the bright red, buzzcut hair style. As I inspect further down to her face, I’m greeted with wide green eyes that are outlined with freckles. No, no, no, no. This is not happening. Artemis is panicking. My roommate is a guy! He’s very tall, if Paul and him stood side-by-side, I think they would be the same height. He has broad shoulders, not as big as Paul, but it definitely looks like he spends time at the gym. His ghost-white pale skin is covered in freckles. His pink lips are parted in a very big “O” and we just stare at each other for what seems like eternity. “Bullocks!” he finally shouts in a baritone voice. “Ye must be my roommate's girlfriend, eh?” he asks. He puts his hands on his hips and looks at me up and down. “Well, if ya two are ganna fuk, can ye at least keep it down? We share a room, ya know? A pretty ‘lil thing like yerself must have his d**k ‘round ya fin’er.” I’m shocked. I could hardly understand this man in front of me but I think he just called me a hussy. “Excuse me?” I asked, appalled. I start to feel my palms heat up as I fiddle with the pendant. “Look, all I’m askin’ for is some peace. I didn’t leave my family to come and listen to my roommate and his girl have s*x. I’m sorry. The name’s Brekin.” he extended his hands for me to shake. I can’t touch him without my hands being noticeably warm, so I just stand and smile. “Whe’rs my roommate, I tink his name is Parker?” he asks as he pulls hand back to his hip. “Um. There must be some mistake. I’m Parker. Parker Wolfe.” There better be a mistake! I am NOT sleeping right next to another male who isn’t my mate! Brekin looks at me for a few seconds before bursting with laughter. What’s so damn funny about this situation?! “Are ye shittin’ me?” he bellows as he walks to the couch. He flops down on his stomach laughing into the blankets. “All this time I was worried about gettin’ some guy who couldn’t keep it in his pants and now I’m stuck with a wee ting like you?” A wee thing? I’ll show you a wee thing, pull down your pants and look in the mirror! Artemis is growling. This is not a good start. “Maybe I should go back down and ask them if there’s a mistake.” I said. I start to pass the couch when he composes himself and stands back up. He clears his throat and looks at me. He looks pretty serious with a hint of fear in his eyes. “Please don’t. Tis is da best ting that could hap’en. I’m gay and havin’ a female as a roommate would help me be at ease. Let’s start over. You can call me Brek. I’m an astrology major.” I looked at his freckled face and green eyes for a few minutes. Artemis isn’t exactly pulling me in any direction, wanting or not wanting this to happen. My anxiety has calmed down and my palms are no longer hot. Looking at him gives me a slight sense of security, since he looks like Paul and if I have any problems with anyone, at least he looks intimidating. I sighed and extended my hand. “I’m Parker, you can call me Par. I’m an architecture major." He takes my hand and we shake and smile at each other. He’s looking over my face and, since I haven’t looked in the mirror lately, I’m sure my makeup is fading and my bruises are starting to show. He looks at the sling on my arm and back to my eyes. He looks apologetic and I know he wants to ask. “I got into an accident a few weeks ago, I was in the hospital when the college decided to take away my single room dorm.” I finally said. “Well Par, how about I show ya around campus? Got yer schedule?” he says with a giant smile. I was about to answer when my stomach erupted with a growl so loud I thought it was Artemis. Brek starts laughing again. “How about we get some food and call it a deh? We can watch some movies, hope you like Twilight and pizza! I’ll find us some delivery.” Does this count as a girls night? Artemis laughs. Do we approve of Brek then? As long as he doesn’t try to go after our mate for himself, he will survive. I laugh to myself as Brek is fumbling around with the smart TV looking for Twilight. I look out our window and see the white peaks of the mountain tops. I can’t wait to see what’s out there.
