Chapter 1 – Awakening

1120 Words
The forest had never felt so alive. Selena crouched low among the roots of an ancient oak, her pulse thrumming in her ears. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, made her senses flare. The shadows shifted around her like predators, and the night smelled sharp with damp earth and pine. Her wolf prowled within her, restless, alert, guiding her instincts even when her mind screamed caution. She exhaled slowly, forcing herself to calm her racing heart. Nights like this were the reason she had learned to read the forest as if it were a map. Every scent, every sound, every subtle shift of the wind told her something. Tonight, however, the forest was speaking with urgency she had never felt before. Selena had always known she was different. Even before she discovered the wolf inside her, there had been a restlessness, a pull toward the wild that others could never understand. But now, fully awakened, she felt the hunger, the coiling energy inside her. The wolf was alive, impatient, and curious, sensing the presence of something—or someone—nearby. Her ears twitched at a faint snap of a branch. She froze. Her muscles tightened. Her wolf growled softly, a low, almost inaudible rumble inside her chest. From the shadows, a figure emerged—tall, broad-shouldered, moving with a confidence that made every hair on Selena’s body rise. Even before he spoke, she could feel his presence: dominance, power, control. “Who’s there?” His voice was smooth, commanding, cutting through the night like steel. Selena held her breath, backing a little into the tree roots. She had been trained to survive, to hide, to avoid unnecessary attention. But instinct whispered that this was different. This man was no ordinary wanderer. His scent, a complex mixture of earth, smoke, and something dark and primal, reached her before he did. “I… I’m just passing through,” she said quietly, trying to keep her voice steady. The man’s gaze swept over her, unblinking. His golden eyes seemed to see into her very soul. “Passing through,” he repeated, almost amused. “At this hour, in the heart of my territory?” He stepped closer, and the air seemed to shift. The wolf inside Selena coiled, muscles tensing, sensing danger—and something else. The Alpha’s scent struck her like a physical blow. Familiar. Magnetic. The wolf inside her trembled and whimpered in recognition. Selena’s chest tightened. She had heard stories of Alphas—men who commanded their packs, their territory, their mates with absolute authority—but this… this was different. “Do I know you?” she asked, trying to mask the tremor in her voice. He stopped, just close enough that the shadows of the forest played across his sharp features. “No,” he said slowly. “But your scent… it is mine.” Selena froze. The words didn’t just hit her—they shook something deep inside her. Her wolf surged, claws scraping at the cage of her ribs. Mate. The word was not spoken, yet it echoed in her mind, resonating with the bond she had felt awaken inside her only days ago. She stumbled back instinctively, nearly tripping over a gnarled root. The man—Riven, she realized, though she had only heard whispers of his name in fear-soaked tales—moved closer again. “You can run,” he said softly, “but some things cannot be escaped.” Selena’s breath caught. She knew he meant her, and she knew he was right. Every instinct screamed that she could not fight this… yet she also could not allow herself to be claimed so quickly, not without understanding the consequences. “I—I don’t belong here,” she whispered, though her voice betrayed her. Riven’s eyes narrowed, golden and sharp, assessing her like prey—and something else, something deeper. He crouched slightly, just enough to reduce the intimidation but not enough to lessen the power radiating from him. “You belong where you are needed,” he said. “And right now… you are needed here.” Selena’s wolf stirred violently inside her. She could feel every heartbeat, every breath, every subtle pull of instinct and dominance from Riven. His presence was intoxicating, terrifying, and oddly comforting all at once. “You don’t even know me,” she said, a little more firmly this time. “No,” he admitted, voice low. “But I know you. That is enough.” The forest seemed to pause. Even the wind held its breath. Selena realized that she was no longer just hiding in the forest. She was standing at the edge of something far larger than herself, something that would test her body, her mind, and the bond she barely understood. Her wolf growled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated through her chest. She pressed herself against the tree trunk, trembling, unsure whether from fear or anticipation. Riven’s gaze softened—not fully, but enough to make her pulse race. “Do not fear me,” he said. “I am not your enemy. But I am not your friend either—not yet. We will see where this bond takes us.” Selena swallowed hard, gripping the tree roots to steady herself. She could feel the pull of him, the draw of the Alpha dominance, the heat of the wolf within her responding to his presence. “I—I need to go,” she whispered, taking a small step back. Riven’s eyes followed her every movement. “Not yet,” he said. “You will stay. Tonight, you learn the forest as it should be learned. You will learn control, instinct, and power. And perhaps… you will begin to understand the bond you cannot ignore.” Selena hesitated. Her wolf surged inside her, urging her to fight, to run, to embrace the danger. She knew she could not refuse him—not completely. Something about Riven demanded obedience, whether she wanted it or not. Slowly, she nodded. “Fine,” she said, voice barely above a whisper. Riven smiled faintly, a rare curve of lips that carried both danger and promise. “Good. Your first lesson begins now.” The forest stretched endlessly before them, alive with shadow, scent, and unseen eyes. Selena’s senses sharpened, every hair standing on end. She could feel her wolf pulsing inside her, coiled and ready, as if it already knew that nothing in this forest—or her life—would ever be the same again. And deep in the shadows, Riven watched, his golden eyes glowing with a predatory focus that promised one thing: she would not leave unchanged.
