An Unexpected Rescuer

560 Words
I felt my body shudder with revulsion, then I heard a woman’s voice yell out. ‘What’s all this about? Are you distracting the laundry girl again? Get away out of here.’ All three of them unceremoniously dropped me and stepped away, embarrassed. Blayze laughed, a bit embarrassed ‘Just a bit of fun, you know us Sal, we don’t mean any harm.’ Jordan pointed to his bloody nose ‘Yeah, we were just teasing her, nothing bad, then she attacked me!’ Jared rubbed the bite mark on his arm, glaring at me as I lay quivering and gasping for breath on the cold stone floor. ‘Its lucky for all of us she’s kept in here, she’s completely insane.’ Sally folded her arms and looked at me sternly while she scolded them. ‘Well, it’s common knowledge that she’s got bad blood and is a curse, so why are you down here looking for trouble instead of at training? Full moon’s tomorrow, you need to be ready for the New King’s arrival. Blayze sauntered over and draped an arm over her skinny shoulders ‘Yes, and we’re all ready for that, we were just bored and looking for a bit of fun.’ Sally harrumphed and pushed him away. ‘Well, fun’s over, now move along. She has work to do, and I can’t have the kitchen running out of towels because you’ve put the laundry wench in the hospital with your shenanigans.’ The three bullies were losing interest fast; Sally might be an Omega, but she did run the kitchen. Any sensible wolf knew better than to offend the person in charge of your food, not unless you wanted the smallest bit of steak every night for a month. Blayze grabbed his jacket, and without a backward look at my bruised and shaking body, all three slammed their way out the steel door. Sally grumbled her way over to me, then lifted me up with suprisingly gentle hands to sit on the narrow bed. She inspected my face, tutted over the torn shirt, and said I should rest for a bit then she would bring me some soup. I lay down, grateful she was in a compassionate mood, and shut my eyes for a minute. I felt numb inside, but my body was still shaking, and Sahara was howling with rage at not being allowed to fight. ‘You know we can’t attack them, you know they will kill us both.’ I whispered to her, as the shaking slowly subsided. ‘Yes, but its been years of this, when will it end? This isn’t a life!’ she was growling at me now, but I knew she was right. ‘Sahara we have to trust the Moon Goddess that she won’t curse us forever. Tomorrow I will pray and we’ll do a ritual, we must try and beg for her pity.’ I could feel her slowly calming down. ‘Selene has protected us all this time. We only have her to rely on. And each other.’ Sahara growled, lovingly this time. ‘We do. And one day we’ll be strong and free, and we’ll rip all their throats out.’ This comforting thought was the last thing I remember as I dozed off, only to be awoken a short time later by Sally bringing me soup and a new t shirt.
