Chapter 4: First Coffee

720 Words
The city buzzed with Saturday energy—markets spilling onto sidewalks, laughter echoing from corner shops, and the smell of roasted beans and pastries drifting through the streets. Michael hadn’t planned to go out that morning, but when his phone buzzed with a simple message from Vicky— “Coffee? My treat.” —he didn’t hesitate. Now he stood outside a small café tucked between a bookstore and a florist. Its windows were fogged slightly, warm against the crisp air outside. Inside, through the glass, he spotted Vicky at a corner table, waving when she noticed him. She wasn’t alone. Two people sat with her: a tall young man with an easy grin, and a woman with bright, curious eyes who seemed to be mid-sentence until Michael walked in. “Michael!” Vicky called warmly, rising to greet him. She wore a soft blue sweater, her hair tied loosely, a strand falling against her cheek. “Glad you could make it.” Michael returned her smile, though his eyes flicked to the others. “This is Sarah,” Vicky said, gesturing to the woman, “my cousin. And this is Daniel—her boyfriend.” Sarah leaned forward immediately, her chin resting on her hand as she studied him. “So you’re Michael,” she said, drawing out the words like she’d been waiting to meet him. Michael blinked. “You’ve… heard of me?” “Only a little,” Sarah replied with a mischievous grin. “Something about mysterious notebooks and bumping into traffic?” Vicky’s cheeks flushed as she shot her cousin a look. “Ignore her. She exaggerates.” Michael chuckled, feeling some of the tension slip away. “Well, I’m glad to know I have a reputation.” Daniel extended a hand across the table. “Don’t mind Sarah. She likes teasing. Welcome to the group, man.” Michael shook his hand, appreciating the easy friendliness in Daniel’s tone. As they settled in, conversation flowed surprisingly well. Sarah was lively, filling the gaps with witty remarks and playful jabs at both Vicky and Daniel. Daniel balanced her out with calm humor and grounded comments, like an anchor to Sarah’s whirlwind energy. Michael mostly listened, though whenever Vicky spoke, he found himself tuning in more closely than anyone else. The way her eyes lit when she described her art, the way her laugh carried even in the busy café—she had a way of making the space around her feel lighter. Halfway through, Sarah excused herself to take a call, dragging Daniel with her. “We’ll give you two a moment,” she said with a sly smile that made Vicky groan. And suddenly, it was just them again. Michael stirred his coffee slowly. “So… was this a setup?” Vicky tilted her head, feigning innocence. “What makes you say that?” “Well, your cousin seemed a little too eager to meet me. I’m starting to wonder if you’ve been… talking about me.” Her lips curved into a small smile. “Maybe I mentioned you once or twice.” Michael met her gaze, a quiet warmth spreading through him. “Only once or twice?” She held his eyes for a moment, then looked away, pretending to sip her tea. “Don’t push your luck.” They both laughed, the sound mingling with the clatter of cups and low chatter around them. For the first time in a long while, Michael felt at ease—not guarded, not weighed down by the past, but simply… present. As they lingered, their conversation drifted to small things—favorite books, music, the city corners they both liked. Yet beneath the casual words ran an undercurrent, subtle but undeniable. Every shared glance, every pause, carried a promise of something more. When Sarah and Daniel returned, Sarah looked between them and smirked knowingly. Michael didn’t mind. For once, he didn’t care what anyone else saw. By the time they left the café, the day had grown brighter, the city humming with life. Vicky walked beside him, her hand brushing against his once, then twice. Neither pulled away. And though no promises were spoken, Michael knew this wasn’t just coffee. It was the beginning of something he couldn’t quite name yet—but desperately wanted to.
