Chapter 14

730 Words
The press conference was scheduled for 7:00 p.m. By 6:45, every major media outlet in the city was live. The assumption was clear. Tonight, Alexander Kane would formalize the engagement. The ballroom at Kane Enterprises was pristine. Controlled. Strategic. Alexander stood alone behind the curtain, adjusting his cufflinks. Marcus stepped beside him. “There’s still time to pivot.” Alexander didn’t look at him. “No.” “This will cost you.” “I’m aware.” Across town, Seraphina watched the live stream from her family’s estate, expression unreadable. Lila sat on her couch, heart pounding so loudly she could barely hear the pre-broadcast commentary. 7:00 p.m. Alexander stepped onto the stage. The applause was anticipatory. Hungry. He waited for silence. “This evening,” he began smoothly, “there has been speculation regarding my personal life and a potential engagement between the Vale and Kane families.” Cameras flashed. He continued. “I want to be absolutely clear.” A pause. Measured. Deliberate. “There is no engagement.” The room froze. “No arrangement has been made. No commitment has been promised. And there will be no marriage used as a corporate strategy.” Gasps rippled through the crowd. Reporters began shouting questions. “Are you ending negotiations with the Vale family?” “Is this about the leaked photo?” “Are you choosing the employee?” His voice hardened. “I will not marry for leverage. I will not commodify my personal life to manipulate market perception.” Upstairs in the executive suite, three board members watched in stunned silence. Alexander’s next words were quieter—but more powerful. “And Kane Enterprises will not be built on coercion.” That did it. The message wasn’t just personal. It was rebellion. He stepped away from the podium before they could regain control of the narrative. The damage—depending on perspective—was done. One Hour Later — Emergency Board Session The atmosphere was volcanic. “You blindsided us,” the chairman snapped. “You attempted to auction my future,” Alexander replied calmly. “You destabilized the company on live television.” “I stabilized my integrity.” “This is not a moral debate. This is business.” “And I am the CEO.” “For now.” Silence. Then the verdict. “Effective immediately,” the chairman said coldly, “you are suspended pending a vote of confidence.” The words landed like a gavel strike. Marcus exhaled slowly. The chairman continued. “You will step down temporarily while we reassess leadership. Publicly, we will frame this as a strategic transition.” A clean corporate execution. Alexander didn’t argue. Didn’t beg. Didn’t flinch. “If that is your decision,” he said evenly, “then I’ll see you at the vote.” He stood. Walked out. No security escorted him. But the message was clear. He was no longer in control of his own empire. Seraphina — The Reaction Her phone buzzed nonstop. Investors. Social elites. Her father. She turned off the television slowly. “He chose her,” her father said flatly. “No,” Seraphina corrected softly. “He chose himself.” Her expression darkened slightly. “Which means he’s vulnerable now.” And vulnerability? Was exploitable. Lila — The Aftermath Her phone lit up with alerts. KANE SUSPENDED AFTER PUBLIC REJECTION OF ENGAGEMENT BOARD MOVES TO PROTECT STABILITY Her heart was racing. He did it. He actually did it. A knock sounded at her door again. When she opened it, Alexander stood there. Not in a suit this time. No corporate armor. Just a man who had detonated his own throne. “You’re suspended,” she whispered. “Yes.” “For me?” “For myself,” he corrected gently. “But you were the catalyst.” Her eyes filled despite herself. “You might lose everything.” He stepped closer. “Then I’ll rebuild.” The simplicity of it shook her more than the sacrifice. “You didn’t have to—” “Yes,” he said quietly. “I did.” Because for the first time in his life— He chose something that wasn’t dictated by legacy. Outside, media vans were already gathering near her building. The world had shifted. Power vacuums were forming. And Seraphina Vale was not the type to retreat quietly.
