Chapter 5

1301 Words
Alpha Lewis patiently waited for his mother to fully regain consciousness as her treatment continued before leaving for the human world again. He was looking forward to coming back to an excited Madeline, who would receive him with smiles only to hear that she had not shown up to work for the past two weeks. At first, he thought Rosetta was pulling a lousy joke, so he went to confirm it from the boss and he received the news he was dreading. None of them had received a word from her for the past one week, and they didn’t bother to do anything about it. “Sudden disappearance and absence from work,” he repeated the boss’s exact words. His bag was placed on one of the visitor’s chairs since he came directly to work to surprise her. Alpha Lewis paced the reception office, avoiding Rosetta’s piercing eyes while waiting for her to summon enough courage to ask questions, but she didn’t. Finally, he fell into the nearest chair, trying to collect his thoughts and process the information he had just heard. A lot of questions were unanswered and nobody was concerned enough to ask them. He understood that to him, Madeline was an asset, but he thought she was friends with everyone at the factory. Why were they all relaxed about the development? Perhaps his head was seeking the wrong answers. His mission was to bring Madeline home, not wonder about the kind of people she surrounded herself with. There and then, he remembered. He had seen her walk into her apartment the day he arrived. If he could retrace his steps that day, he would locate her. Immediately, he sat still, calming his nerves and practicing mindful breathing while taking a walk down the memory lane. He maintained the position for a few minutes before jerking back to reality, hurrying off to her house just like he had pictured. “Thank you, Rose,” he shouted, startling the lady even more. When Alpha Lewis arrived at her apartment, the building was quiet, and it seemed she was the only one living there. It looked more like a family, but that was not something he wanted to analyze at the moment, so he knocked and waited for a response but heard nothing. He didn’t have a number for her, so he couldn’t even call her. “God,” he said, leaning against the wall upon realization of the mistake he had made. He should have asked for her number before leaving the factory, but none of that occurred to him. Hopefully, he sat, waiting for when she would be done with whatever she must have gone to attend to and return home. He encouraged himself every time his heart sank and the fear of her not returning gripped him. Alpha Lewis knew he needed to do something about her disappearance if she didn’t return home by the end of the day, but he dosed off, only to wake up the next morning to the noise coming from the busy street. There was no sign of her return. Alpha Lewis could sense that something was wrong. He immediately began to search for her using the same old-fashioned method he planned on using originally. He wandered the neighborhood, not knowing who to ask, but hoping that he could catch a hazy glimpse of her. Work was already in the past because nothing made sense anymore, not even his source of income. Moreover, he didn’t have need of the job again. He already had enough resources to sustain himself. His entire thoughts, being and everything revolved around finding Madeline. Nothing else mattered at that point. Days had grown into weeks, and still there was no sign of her. Frustrated, he sat outside, absorbing the warmth of the sun. Enjoying its feel against his scalp and skin. The temporary feeling of satisfaction relaxed him a little, distracting him from his mirage of a life. Suddenly, his phone rang and he picked up immediately, hopeful that there would be some brightening news. An auto-tuned voice spoke into his ear, warning him to keep their conversation private before proceeding to deliver his message. He was called to show up at a place identified only as “dark arena” by 9PM if he wanted to see Madeline alive again. His heart leapt at the mention of her name, and without second thoughts, he agreed to show up with whatever they asked for. Surprisingly, they only asked for his presence and nothing more. The call left Alpha Lewis elated and impatient. 9 PM seemed to be decades away, so he waited for the sun to set, believing that to be a milestone. Then, he waited for darkness to descend, and just like that, he headed out, giving himself time to arrive at the location. Alpha Lewis went in as soon as he arrived, not minding the seclusion of the building that seemed like an abandoned sports arena. He saw Madeline tied to a chair, her mouth taped, and her eyes blindfolded. He walked to her and removed the blindfold. Holding her gaze immediately the fold came loose. Her eyes shone from the tears burning in them, but he gave her a “let’s get you out of here” nod and wend ahead to untie her. One of her captors ran in, and he dived at him immediately, snapping his neck. Two more came and he repeated the process, and five more came, and five more, and five more. He fought tactfully and fearlessly, snapping the necks of as many as he could until he became out numbered. They crowded him, throwing punches and kicks, till his consciousness escaped his body. When he regained consciousness, the crowd were still there, manning over them while they awaited a superior. He was tied to a chair, just like Madeline, and he still felt the soreness from the beating all over his body. When one of them found that he was awake, he, in the bid to torture him more slapped Madeline severally, smirking as though to say “I dare you.” Alpha Lewis’ eyes darkened from watching him giggle at her whimpering. Without holding back, she shifted forms into a werewolf and shattered the chair he was tied to, watching their faces get washed over by horror. His transformation was a quick one, but he gave them the benefit of extra time to catch up on what just happened while he cracked his bones. The first unfortunate guy dashed towards him, taking off a few meters close to him and landing a kick in his chest. He stood grounded, picking the man by the leg and using him and a weapon to fight the remaining ones. Again, they thought their grouping would create the same effect it did when he was human, but they only made it easier for him, causing him to kill them unscathed. He dusted himself and walked back to Madeline, who he suspected was living for the tape to get off her mouth so she could talk. He started with her legs, then moved to her hands before ripping the duct tape away. “You’re a werewolf?” she asked, the same look of disdain she gave him on their first encounter, beautifully plastered across her face. The eyes he fought to stare into one more time exuded a fine blend of fear and rejection; the finest of that, and for the first time Alpha Lewis was tongue-tied. Not even a thousand words could cause her disappointment or disdain to dissipate. He was so scared at that point. He wasn't concerned about his people or his country. All he could think about was Madeline. Had he scared this girl that caught his heart away?
