I quickly remembered my very first gym class; they had interrupted coach and had threatened each and every boy, that if they even throw a ball at me that the next time they would throw a ball it would be one of their own. I shuddered at the thought. As I gingerly walked up to their table assessing the damage on each of them, and seeing which one I would be able to get on my side first. Nate. He was always the softer one out of the three, and I had always thought as he and I to be closer, mainly because he used to play dress up with me.
Jason spoke first; I noticed when he did the Lunch room quieted down slightly “I hear we are having a party, Katie?" He said in a questioning tone.
“You heard then?” I grimaced.
I was in serious trouble. My brothers were known for their good looks and their protectiveness over me, but never their parties. Due to the fact they had never hosted one.
“Yeah, we heard Katie. How on earth did you expect us not to? The entire school has been invited!” Shane was angry, not furious but angry.
I also noticed how his eye twitched ever so slightly.
“I’m sorry okay! It kind of just... slipped out.” I used my childhood sad puppy face on them.
As usual, their angry faces simmered down to calm demeanour.
“Yeah, well, you can’t have it Katie! It’s way too dangerous!” I looked directly at Jason and scowled then looked at the floor hiding my anger.
“How is it dangerous? If you’ve seen the video, and I have doubt that you have, then you would have seen that I had handled Kieran all on my own! He’s the worse one of them all! So, please Jason, or any of you, does not tell me that I cannot look after myself!” They all sighed in sync, knowing what I said was true, and they couldn’t think of anything good to combat my argument.
“Well?” I asked, raising my eyebrows
“Fine, but on one condition,” I looked over to Shane, and nodded my head once. “You have to do the cleaning up on your own!” I quickly nodded before jumping up and down squealing in excitement.
I was going to have a party! Excitement flooded my body and I couldn’t help the smile that was forming on my face!
“Katie, now will you please tell us what the hell happened between you and Kieran?” Jason sad Kieran’s name which such distaste that even a couple of their friends behind them cringed and looked away.
“Nothing serious, I promise! He just had to be taught a lesson,” I shrugged.
I suppose this is really unlike me but who cares, It my birthday, I’m allowed to get away with it.
“And it had to be our little sister who decided to give him one.” Nate smirks whilst shaking his head in disbelief.
“Not so little anymore.” Jason added equally surprised.
I was going to reply when I heard a loud man’s voice over every sound in the room coming through small speakers in the corners across the room.
“Will Ms’ Katharine Wood, please come to the principal’s office immediately. I repeat, will Ms’ Katharine Wood, please come to the principal’s office immediately.” My eyes widen as all eyes turned to me as the room went silent awaiting my reaction.
I looked over to Shane, Jason, and Nate and to my surprise, they were looking in a way that said, we expected better of you. Jason held my bag out to me and told me to go. I nodded and told them I would meet them at the car after school. Walking to the door the room was still silent, everyone was watching me take what seemed like ‘the walk of death’ but I kept my head high and avoided eye contact knowing that my calm exterior would crumble, if I saw the eyes of the students around me.
I pulled the door open and walked down the hallway. I was expecting it to be empty, but it was filled with students in a similar way to the ones in the lunch room. This time I looked down feeling the old, shy Katie come to the surface. I went to the big brown door marked as ‘Principal’s Office’ and knocked loudly twice. I entered when I heard a gruff come in from the other side of the door. Our school’s principle was a mystery to those who have never been in trouble as we hear, he is not the most joyful person and doesn’t want to hang around hooligans such as ourselves, so he keeps himself in his office and only comes out at the end of the day. This for me was like a meeting with the devil.
“Hello, I’m Katharine Woods, sir?” he was looking down at some paperwork and didn’t look up when he waved me inside and appointed me a chair to sit in.
For a minute or two, I was sitting in silence while he was finishing off his paper work, but soon enough he put down his pen and looked over to me.
“Now Katharine, how do you explain your actions of today towards one of our students?” His voiced sounded softer than it did over the microphone.
“I’m sorry for the interruption I caused, but I will never be sorry for what I did to Kieran.” I stated stern and it was true I wouldn’t take it back for anything.
“I see, and how do you feel you should be punished?” he says in the same boring tone.
“Punishment- I don’t feel I should be punished for something that the entire school has been waiting to happen for a while now! He deserved it.”
