Victoria's fist pounds on the front door again, the sound loud and furious.
"Hayden! Open this door right now! You can't hide from me forever!"
Hayden has gone rigid. His eyes keep darting to the door. I press my lips to his temple.
"Ignore her," I whisper.
He doesn't answer. He just squeezes my hand harder.
"Hayden Wolfe, you owe me an explanation! How dare you throw Astrid out like trash and pretend nothing happened? I let her in! I let her stay! You don't get to—"
I stand up slowly.
"Eden—" Hayden says.
"Shh." I cup his face with both hands, my thumbs brushing the dark circles under his eyes. "We're not doing this tonight. You're burning up, did you notice? You're exhausted too. And I'm not letting her anywhere near you right now."
