# THE FACELESS SOUL ## Book 2 - Chapter 2 ## Chapter 13: They Have Noor **Lahore. Alina Villa. 3:42 PM.** Amina’s phone slipped from her hand and hit the marble floor. The sound was too loud. On the screen: Photo of Noor. Age 12. Leaving school. Backpack. Pigtails. Red circle drawn around her head. Subject line: *We have Noor.* But there was no body in the photo. No ransom note. Just the photo. And a timer. *24:00:00* *23:59:59* Ayaan was in the kitchen making chai. He heard the phone drop. He was in the living room in 2 seconds. "What happened?" Amina couldn’t speak. She just turned the laptop. Ayaan read it. Once. Twice. His face didn’t change. Not on the outside. "Where is she?" His voice was flat. Dead. "I called the school. 20 minutes ago. She left with Hamza Uncle." Amina was already dialing. "Hamza? HAMZA!" Voicemail. Amina’s legs gave out. She sat on the floor. Ayaan knelt in front of her. Took her face in his hands. "Breathe. Breathe with me. In. Out. In. Out." "Baba they took her," Amina whispered. "They took my baby." "No." Ayaan’s eyes were steel. "They took a picture. We don’t know anything yet." Aayat ran in from upstairs. "What’s wrong? Why is Noor’s school calling me?" Amina showed her the email. Aayat didn’t scream. She went completely still. "Call the police." "I already did," Ayaan said. "And Interpol. And every contact we have." --- **4:30 PM. Command Center. Alina Foundation.** Hamza, 50 now, grey, was yelling into 3 phones. Police, FIA, Army. Amina was pacing. Laptop open. Tracing the email. "It’s routed through 7 countries," she said. "Russia. Brazil. Nigeria. They’re good." "They want us to panic," Ayaan said. He was calm. Too calm. "They want us to make a mistake." Aayat sat in a chair, holding Noor’s school sweater. "What if they already hurt her?" "They won’t," Ayaan said. "Not yet. They want something." His phone rang. Unknown number. He answered on speaker. "Hello, Ayaan Malik." The voice was young. Smiling. Distorted. "Who is this?" Ayaan asked. "Doesn’t matter who I am. What matters is what I have." A pause. Then: Noor’s voice. Small. "Nana?" Ayaan closed his eyes. "Noor. Baby. Are you okay?" "I'm sca—" cut off. The voice came back. "She’s fine. For now. You have 23 hours. We want 3 things." "Name them," Ayaan said. "One: Drop all charges against Elias and Specter. Two: Transfer $100 million to this account. Three: You come alone. To the old Alina Tower. 50th floor. Midnight. With the original USB." Click. Silence. Amina was shaking. "Baba, no. You can’t go alone." Ayaan looked at her. "I’m not going to negotiate with terrorists." "Then what?" Aayat asked. "What do we do?" Ayaan walked to the window. Looked at Lahore. 19 years ago he stood in that same tower with a mask. "Same thing I did last time," he said quietly. "I go get my family back." --- **10 PM. Planning.** Police wanted to do a raid. Ayaan said no. "They’ll kill her." Interpol wanted to track the money. Ayaan said no. "We don’t have time." Amina wanted to go with him. Ayaan said no. "You’re the lawyer. You stay and work the legal side. If I don’t come back, you finish this." Amina grabbed his arm. "Baba, please. Don’t do this alone." Ayaan cupped her face. "I taught you how to fight in the light, jaan. Now let me do one last thing in the dark." He didn’t say "for Noor." He didn’t have to. --- **11:30 PM. Old Alina Tower. 50th Floor.** Empty. Dusty. Same floor. Ayaan walked in. No gun. No mask. Just a USB in his pocket. And a phone. 5 men were waiting. And in the middle, tied to a chair: Noor. "Baba!" she cried. Ayaan’s heart broke. But his face didn’t. "Hey, jaan. I’m here." The man in front stepped forward. Late 20s. White mask with red X. "You came alone," he said. "Good." "Where’s the money?" Ayaan asked. "First the USB. Then the money. Then the girl." Ayaan pulled out the USB. Tossed it. It skidded across the floor. The man picked it up. "This better be real." "It is." Ayaan took a step forward. "Now let her go." "After I check it." The man plugged it into a laptop. Ayaan used the 3 seconds. He moved. It wasn’t like 20 years ago. He was 64. Slower. But he was angrier. 2 men down in 5 seconds. The man with the laptop pulled a gun. "Baba, no!" Noor screamed. Ayaan tackled him. They went down. Gun went off. Bullet hit the ceiling. The other 2 men ran. Cowards. Ayaan was on top of the leader. Had his wrist. "Where are the others?" he growled. The man laughed, even as Ayaan broke his arm. "You’ll never—" Police burst in. Hamza. Interpol. It was over in 30 seconds. Ayaan ran to Noor. Cut the ropes. "Jaan. Jaan, look at me." Noor threw her arms around him. "Nana! I was so scared!" "I know. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry." Ayaan held her tight. "I’m here. You’re safe." Amina burst in 10 seconds later. "NOOR!" "Mama!" Noor ran to her. Amina fell to her knees and held her daughter like she’d never let go. Ayaan stood up. Looked at the man in cuffs. Elias’s nephew. Specter’s new leader. "Take him away," Ayaan said. --- **Hospital. 3 AM.** Noor was fine. Bruises. Dehydration. But fine. Ayaan sat outside her room. Head in his hands. Amina sat next to him. "Baba." He didn’t answer. "Baba, look at me." He looked up. His eyes were red. "I’m sorry," he whispered. "I failed. Again." Amina grabbed his hand. "You didn’t fail. You saved her. You always save us." "I’m too old for this." Ayaan laughed, broken. "I’m supposed to be retired." Amina leaned on his shoulder. "Then retire. For real this time. Let me handle Specter." Ayaan looked at her. His daughter. 28. Tired. Brave. "Deal," he said. "But you call me every day." "Deal." --- **1 Week Later.** Specter’s leader got 50 years. The $100 million was never transferred. The USB was a fake. It wiped their servers instead. Noor went back to school. With 4 bodyguards. She hated it. But she understood. One night, Amina found Ayaan in his office. The safe was open. Empty. "What did you do?" she asked. Ayaan held up the real USB. "I destroyed it." "Baba—" "If they want to hurt us, they’ll have to do it without ghosts." Ayaan put it in a shredder. "No more leverage. No more past." The machine whirred. Amina hugged him. "Thank you." --- **6 Months Later. Geneva.** Amina was presenting "Amina’s Law" to the UN again. This time it passed in 40 countries. Her closing line: "My father taught me to fight. My mother taught me to heal. My daughter taught me why." She got a standing ovation. On the flight home, she got a text from Noor: *Khala, I drew you a picture. It’s you with a cape. Like a superhero.* Amina cried on the plane. --- **Epilogue: 2 Years Later. Noor is 14.** Family dinner. Alina Villa. Noor: "Khala, can I intern at the Foundation this summer?" Amina: "You’re 14." Noor: "So? You started at 16." Ayaan: "She has a point." Amina looked at her dad. Then at her daughter. "Fine," she said. "But no field work. Office only." Noor pumped her fist. "Yes!" After dinner, Ayaan and Amina were on the roof. "Baba, do you ever regret it?" Amina asked. "All of it?" Ayaan looked at the stars. At his daughter. At his granddaughter inside. "No," he said. "Because it led me here." Amina took his hand. "Me too." Below them, Noor was laughing in the kitchen with Aayat. No ghosts. No masks. No fear. Just 3 generations of Maliks. Who chose to be light. --- **Final Teaser for Chapter 14:** Email to Amina: *Subject: We’re not done.* *Body: The USB was fake. But we made 100 copies. - S* Amina closes her laptop. " Baba," she says. "We have a problem." --- ### END OF CHAPTER 13
