Prologue
Freshman Year (H.S.)
Amberlynn's Pov
I was going into my first year of high school when something unexpected happened, and I did not know what to do when it all came crashing down on me. My life took an unexpected turn, leaving me feeling like I would never fully breathe again.
I was getting home when I found my mother crying on the living room couch. I did not expect the news that would change my life forever.
“Amberlynn, I have something to tell you.” We had some MPs show up about your father. He was in an accident. They informed me that your father had died during his deployment.
“What do you mean he was in an accident? What happened to him? Mom, please tell me!”
I am crying so much that it is hard to understand what is happening right now, and it is even harder to hear when all I hear is static noise in my ears and the beating of my heartbeat. It feels like I want to pass out and pretend this was a bad dream that I can wake up from.
“I am sorry, Amberlynn; someone ambushed their truck, and no one survived. They have a military plane bringing him and his entire unit back to the States for their last resting place.”
I do not know what to do, so I ran to my room and locked the door so the outside world could not witness my ultimate breakdown. I do not think my life will ever be the same. My dad’s absence made the future feel impossible, and he used to support my dream of being the first female head coach of an NHL hockey team. I wanted him there to witness my accomplishments, cheering me on as he always does, regardless of his location.
