The Call Of The Hidden

1308 Words
I awoke to an unfamiliar sensation tugging at me—a deep, silent pull from somewhere outside, as if something hidden in the forest was reaching out, calling my name. The shadows that had settled within me over the past days pulsed now, alive and aware, as if they knew something I didn’t and were urging me to follow. The room was still dark; dawn was far off, and the village lay silent around me. I imagined everyone wrapped in ordinary dreams, their lives untouched by the strange magic I now carried. For them, tonight was just another night. But for me, that call kept building, growing more insistent with every passing moment. I lay still, trying to push the feeling aside, but it was no use. Deep down, I knew this wasn’t something I could ignore, nor something I should face alone. The fear of the unknown loomed large, yet a part of me craved answers, even if they lay hidden within shadows. A light knock broke the silence. Startled, I sat up and looked toward the door. It was so quiet that I could hear my heart thudding in my chest as I crossed the room. I pulled the door open, half-expecting to see nothing but shadows on the other side. But there he was—Ryder, his face set with a familiar look of determination that eased my nerves. “Couldn’t sleep either?” I asked, hoping my voice sounded steadier than I felt. He shook his head, his gaze softening as he took in my expression. “I had this… feeling. That you’d need me tonight.” Ryder had always seemed to know what I needed, even before I could find the words. It was as if he could sense the turmoil inside me, and his presence now was a steadying force, an anchor against the pull of the shadows. I swallowed, grateful for him in a way I couldn’t put into words. “Something’s calling me, Ryder,” I confessed, my voice barely a whisper. “I don’t know why, but I feel like I need to go.” He looked at me for a long moment, as if weighing something in his mind. Then he nodded, his gaze steady. “Then we’ll go together.” We moved through the village in silence, our footsteps muffled by the night. The streets were empty, shadows stretching across the ground like dark arms reaching for us. The forest loomed ahead, tall and silent, its trees standing like watchful guardians of a world that most villagers dared not enter. The moment we crossed the edge of the forest, the air changed, thickening as if infused with an ancient power. The shadows wrapped around us, whispering in a language I couldn’t quite understand. Yet somehow, I felt no fear—only an intense awareness, a connection to the forest that seemed to grow with each step. Ryder walked close, his presence a comforting warmth beside me. We didn’t speak, but every now and then, his hand brushed against mine, grounding me. Even with the shadows whispering, his touch reminded me of the light I still carried, a strength that balanced the darkness within. As we made our way deeper into the forest, the path grew darker, the trees closing in around us. Everything seemed to hold its breath, as if even the night creatures had retreated in deference to some unseen force. The silence was heavy, pressing down on us with a weight that was almost tangible. Ryder finally broke the silence, his voice low. “This place… it feels alive. Like it’s waiting for us.” “It is,” I replied softly, feeling the truth of it resonate deep within me. “The shadows know we’re here. They… want us here.” We walked on until we came upon a clearing, smaller than the one where I’d met the stranger, yet no less strange. The air vibrated with a quiet energy, an undercurrent of something both powerful and restrained. A faint glow shone in the center of the clearing, casting an otherworldly light that flickered, like a dying ember clinging to life. Ryder tensed beside me, his gaze locked on the glow. “Do you see that?” I nodded, my heart pounding with a strange mixture of fear and curiosity. “It’s calling me, Ryder. I think… I think I need to go closer.” He looked at me, a flicker of worry in his eyes, but he nodded, his voice steady. “I’m right here.” With Ryder at my side, I stepped forward. The glow pulsed as we neared, its light intensifying, as though it were alive, sensing my approach. I reached out, my fingers mere inches from it, and the air around us shifted, thickening with a presence I recognized instantly. “Elara.” The voice was soft yet powerful, filling the clearing like a warm breeze. It was him—the figure in the shadows. But he didn’t appear, only his voice echoed through the night, wrapping around us like a comforting embrace. “You have returned,” he said, his tone carrying a hint of satisfaction. “The shadows have chosen you, Elara. You are bound to them now, to a purpose far beyond this village.” I took a shaky breath, trying to steady myself. “What purpose?” I asked, my voice stronger than I felt. “Why me?” A pause stretched through the clearing, heavy and laden with meaning. “Because you hold a balance,” he said at last, his voice softer. “You carry a strength that others would use to corrupt. There are those who seek the shadows for power, to twist them for their own gain. But you… you are different.” I felt Ryder’s hand tighten around mine, his silent support a balm against the weight of the words. “What do I need to do?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. The figure’s voice softened, almost tender. “To protect what you hold, you must learn its limits. The shadows will test you, Elara. They will push you to places you fear, places you don’t yet understand.” A chill crept over me, but I nodded, the weight of his words settling into my bones. This was something I was meant to carry, a power that I would have to come to terms with, even if I didn’t fully understand it yet. “Will I see you again?” I asked, hoping for some reassurance, some sign that I wouldn’t be left alone in this journey. The shadows around us shifted, and I felt a faint warmth brush against my skin, like a gentle touch. “In time, Elara. When you are ready.” And just like that, the presence faded, leaving only the faint glow at my fingertips, a warmth that lingered even as the shadows withdrew. I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his words settle over me like a cloak. Ryder’s gaze met mine, his eyes filled with a mix of worry and pride. “Are you okay?” I nodded, though a part of me still trembled with the unknown. “I think… I think this is only the beginning.” We stood in silence, the gravity of the moment stretching between us. Whatever lay ahead, I knew I could face it. Not just because of the shadows or the strange power that had chosen me, but because Ryder was there, steadfast and unshaken. As we turned to leave, the faint glow flickered one last time, a reminder of what lay ahead, hidden deep within the forest and in the shadows within me. The path forward was dark, filled with unknowns, but I knew I was ready to face it.
