CHAPTER 6 Vance pov “Did your skin get fairer? You look so beautiful.” I whispered against Scarlet's neck as I nuzzled on it. She giggled softly as she leaned closer to me. “It's such a shame I'm betrothed to your brother. He doesn't even touch me. He treats me like a trophy doll, just cooped up in this big palace.” I sighed heavily as I moved slowly to sleep on my back with my hand supporting my head. “Easy on Ryker, he's just protecting you.” “Whatever you say, Vance. At least I have his strong brother, keeping my bed warm every night.” Her lips turned up into those naughty smiles she gave me whenever she was in the mood. “Can you believe what he did last night? I went to his chamber and even ordered wine for us. And he sent me out like I was some slave. He totally embarrassed me in front of that maid.” I blinked slowly as I listened to Scarlet. She always has something to talk about. And it's always about my brother. “Scarlet, I'll see you soon.” I got off the bed as I began to put on my clothes. Her face turned into a frown as she sat up, looking at me like I was abandoning her. “What? So soon?” “You know I can't stay here for long. Garruk will be returning tonight, and I need to meet up with him. I can't raise suspicions.” I said as I buttoned my shirt. “When can I see you again?” Her voice was as soft as a child's voice. “You know we'll always see each other.” “No, you know what I mean.” I let out a sharp breath as I pushed my hair back a little and caught her eyes. “I don't know, Scarlet. I'll see you soon.” I went straight to the entrance. Garruk, the beta of the pack and the strongest hunter, was returning from his mission. Polaris Citadel is one of the biggest packs in the wolf empire. We have a lot of werewolves from different packs, even some residing here, and due to the influx of numbers, social vices are on the rise. There have been several instances where we've caught merchants using counterfeits, and every time they were questioned, they never revealed where they obtained them. Their main motive is replacing the counterfeit with the real money until the treasury is filled with counterfeit. “Lord Vance,” Garruk called out. “Garruk, welcome.” We shook our hands as we greeted each other. “How was everything?” “It was quite fine, Lord Vance, I shall brief you as soon as I have a word with Alpha Ryker. I'll excuse myself now.” Garruk bowed as he walked off. My fists balled beside me as I watched his shadow disappear. How long do I have to live in my brother's shadow? How f*****g long? Just how long will it take for the curse to take over completely? Once he loses his mind, they'd have to make me the alpha. And then, I'll finally be treated with high value. I walked back inside the palace. My head was in the clouds, and I barely looked at where I was going. As I raised my head to look ahead, I almost collided with someone. She gasped and mistakenly dropped her tray out of shock. Before I could even talk, she went on her knees as she clasped her hands together. “Forgive me, Lord Vance. I didn't see you. Please forgive me.” She cried as she held my feet. I tilted my head to the side as I stared down at her. It gave me some sort of satisfaction watching her like this. This fear, this dedication. It excited me. Is this how Ryker feels every time he decides someone's fate? It's f*****g amazing. I can't wait to have that kind of power. “Leave.” My voice was firm as I spoke, she hurriedly grabbed the tray as she scurried off. As I was about to walk away, my eye caught something. A girl…well, a maid. She stood by the balcony as she gazed at the sky with so much passion. Was she intrigued by the sky? The thought made me smile. As if she could feel me, she turned suddenly, and our eyes met. She didn't look away. Her eyes stayed on me for a while before she finally looked down. She bowed and walked away. I stood there dumbfounded. “What? She looked at me?” Even Scarlet couldn't do that until I granted her that permission, and this slave just does it? Wait, is she the new slave Ryker brought in? Wow, well, this is quite interesting. Ryker Pov “So there's still no lead?” “Yes, alpha.” I breathed out heavily as I drank my liquor. “Alpha.” I turned slowly to meet Garruk's eyes. He observed me keenly. I knew he had seen something, and I knew exactly what it was. “Your eye colour changed. Did you go into heat?” I smiled as I ran my hand through my hair. Garruk has always been a sharp person, one of the reasons he became my beta. “Yes.” “How? You've been able to keep it under control for so long. What went wrong?” What a funny question. What should I tell him? That a single whiff of a slave girl pulled me into a heat instantly?
