CHAPTER 7
Liana Pov
I'm sharing a room with three other girls. It's been exactly three days since I've been in the Royal Palace.
I've learned a lot, and I'm still learning. The alpha is very intimidating, but his brother is actually not like that.
He looks soft, like a pillow of feathers.
The girls here told me that it's almost impossible to serve the Alpha’s chamber, but when Lady Scarlet pointed me to serve her wine, the whole room erupted with gasps.
Probably because I was a newbie. I got to meet the alpha again, but I followed procedure this time around. I never looked up.
But the alpha's mood suddenly switched, and he ordered us to leave. I left immediately, but Lady Scarlet was there for a while before she left fuming.
Why did he do that? Although I don't know much about the alpha, I did hear that a woman warmed his bed every night.
One of the reasons they betrothed him was for him to quit his licentious ways, so why is he being so rough with her? Has he grown tired of her? Did she do something to upset him?
There's one thing that keeps me up at night all the time. That voice that spoke in my head.
Was it really my wolf? There's no way a wolf can disappear like that, right?
I've never heard of a case like that, no matter how weak the person is, their wolf is always retained.
So if my wolf actually spoke to me that night, why did it disappear as if it was never there in the first place?
I'm really confused.
****
Morning came soon, and I helped the girls tidy up the palace.
I haven't seen Stella ever since the trial. I'm sure she's fine wherever she is. I haven't made any friends here.
I always feel left out whenever they're conversing, and I can't join them.
Mostly because they're saying I had something to do with the Alpha…how absurd.
The alpha wouldn't even look at me twice…well, he did, but I'm sure it was a mistake.
“Gather around, girls.” Mira, the head housekeeper, announced, and we all obliged.
Mira was an old woman, she carried this strict and heavy face whenever she was around. She never smiled, not even once.
Her hands were always folded in front of her. Her face had wrinkles, but not too many to look like an old woman. Although she had a few grey hairs, you could see that she had dyed most of them.
She paced the length of the room, and everyone's eyes followed her.
“Flora, step up here.” Her tone was so authoritative, it made the hairs on my back stand.
The girl stepped up with her head down and her fingers nervously fidgeting with each other. “You're no longer going to serve in the Royal chamber, you've been demoted to the stables for bumping into lord Vance.”
The girl fell onto her knees with tears streaming down her face as she grabbed Mira's feet.
“Please, Madam…” Before she could even finish speaking, Mira kicked her with her feet and ordered the guards to take her away.
I watched as they dragged her out forcibly. It was such a nasty sight. But I couldn't say anything, not while I was the black sheep, and plus, that girl didn't like me anyway.
“This is a warning to all of you, you are to treat the Royal family with utmost respect at all times. One mistake and you're gone. You're dismissed.”
The room erupted into murmurs as she left. That was so harsh, just then, I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
My medicine, I haven't taken it yet. I rushed back to the room to take it, but upon arrival, I realised that two maids were beside my bed.
“Oh, if it isn't the witch slut who bewitched the Alpha.”
I believe her name is Casidy. She wasn't very beautiful, she had brunette hair, and she was very pale.
Although she wasn't old, she had wrinkles. How does that even happen?
“Excuse me.”
Cassidy rolled her eyes and dismissed what I had just said.
“Are you coming for this?” She waved my medicine in the air. It was kept in a small container.
My heart almost leapt when she waved it. “Give me that.” I tried reaching for it, but she moved further away.
Their laughter filled the space of the room, and my heart was boiling with anger. Not only was my heart boiling with anger, but it was hurting too, I needed my medicine.
“I don't have time for these games, I need my medicine,” I said in a stern voice.
“Is this it? The potion you used? Is that why you're so restless? What would happen if I drank it instead? Would the alpha look my way?”
“Oh please, even the Beta wouldn't look at you.” The words came out before I could even finish thinking. Cassidy's face turned up into a frown as the other girl gasped.
“You dare insult me?”
“Just give it back.” I tried to brush it off, but the pain intensified in my chest.
“Let's see what happens when you don't take your witch potion, wolfless.”
“Aahh.” I fell onto the wooden floor as I clutched my chest in pain. My head was spinning, and I had started to sweat profusely.
My breath came in short, jagged breaths. And my eyes could hardly stay open. It felt like shards of glass were being pierced into my heart.
The pain in my chest squeezed tighter, as if invisible claws were twisting around my heart. I lay coiled on the cold floorboards, my vision blurring at the edges while Casidy and her friend laughed, dangling the tiny glass bottle just out of reach.
"Please..." The word scraped out of my throat, barely a whisper. "Give it back..."
"Oh, look at her, begging like a dog," Casidy sneered, holding the medicine higher.
"Maybe if you get on your knees and admit what kind of foul spell you cast on the Alpha, I'll think about…"
BANG.
The door burst open with a resounding crash that rattled the walls, nearly tearing off its hinges.
Casidy gasped, freezing mid-sentence, while the other maid recoiled with a muted shriek.
Standing in the doorway was Lord Vance. He looked soft at a distance, but right now, the air around him crackled with a terrifying, heavy pressure.
His eyes flicked from my trembling, sweat-drenched frame on the floor straight to the bottle clenched tightly in Casidy’s hand.
The sneer vanished from Casidy's face, replaced instantly by pure, unadulterated panic. Both girls turned dead pale, bowing their heads so fast their knees almost buckled beneath them.
"What," Lord Vance’s voice echoed through the narrow room, dangerously calm yet cold, "is going on in here?"
