Sunlight crept into the room, slipping past the hotel curtains in pale golden streaks. Elena stirred against the sheets, the weight of a strong arm still draped across her waist. For a disoriented moment, she thought she was dreaming.
But then Adrian shifted behind her, pressing a slow kiss to her shoulder. The warm brush of his lips stole her breath, and reality crashed back with it.
Last night wasn’t a dream. It had been real. Every stolen touch, every whispered plea, every line crossed until there was no going back.
She closed her eyes, torn between wanting to stay in the cocoon of his arms and the panic clawing at her chest.
“You’re awake,” Adrian murmured against her skin, his voice low and gravelly with sleep.
“Mm.” It was all she could manage.
He shifted again, his hand splaying against her stomach, pulling her back more firmly against him. The heat of his body enveloped her, and when his mouth found the tender spot just below her ear, she let out an involuntary sigh.
“Don’t start,” she whispered, though her tone lacked conviction.
He chuckled softly. “I already did.”
She turned in his arms, meeting his eyes in the slant of morning light. His hair was tousled, his jaw shadowed, his expression softer than she’d ever seen. Dangerous, she thought, how much she wanted to stay like this.
When he kissed her again, it wasn’t urgent the way it had been last night. It was slow, teasing, like he had all the time in the world. His hand cupped her face, thumb brushing her cheek, while his body pressed hers deeper into the mattress.
“Elena,” he breathed, his lips trailing down her neck, sending shivers across her skin. “You have no idea what you do to me.”
Her fingers curled into his shoulders, holding on, even as her mind screamed at her to stop. Because if she didn’t stop now, she might never stop.
“Adrian…” she whispered, her voice unsteady.
He lifted his head, his forehead resting against hers. His eyes were darker now, his breathing uneven, and she could feel the battle raging inside him.
That was when the shift came. The warmth of his touch lingered, but his expression sobered.
“We need rules,” he said quietly.
The words pierced the haze between them.
She blinked, confusion threading through her. “Rules?”
He sat up slightly, dragging a hand through his hair, as if pulling himself back under control. “If we don’t… last night will catch up to us. And when it does, it won’t just be me who pays the price.”
Her stomach twisted. She sat up too, pulling the sheet across her chest. “So what, you want to… regulate this?”
His gaze softened, but his voice stayed firm. “We can’t text on company accounts. No late-night calls unless it’s urgent. No leaving together. And Caroline—” He paused, the name like a stone between them. “Caroline can never know.”
Elena’s heart squeezed at that. Caroline, who had trusted her, who had given her chances she hadn’t dared hope for. The guilt pressed heavier than any sheet.
She nodded, even as her throat ached. “Fine. Rules.”
Adrian reached for her hand, fingers brushing hers as if he couldn’t bear to let her drift too far. “It’s not about pushing you away,” he said softly. “It’s about survival.”
Her lips curved into a faint, pained smile. “Survival isn’t the same as living.”
The silence after was sharp, stretching taut.
Then her phone buzzed on the nightstand. Elena snatched it up, her pulse spiking when she saw the name flashing across the screen.
Caroline.
Her voice shook only a little as she answered. “Hello?”
“Elena,” Caroline’s voice was bright, brisk, professional. “Can you come by my office at nine? I’d like to go over some updates before the team meeting.”
Elena swallowed hard, glancing at Adrian, who was already buttoning his shirt. “Of course. I’ll be there.”
When she hung up, Adrian’s eyes met hers. His expression was unreadable, but his voice was low and certain.
“Rule number one,” he said. “No one can ever know.”
Elena looked down at the sheet clutched in her fists, her heart pounding in her chest. Because she already knew the truth: keeping their secret would be harder than surviving last night’s fire.
