Act- 3 Chapter- 10 One is the Loneliest Number

4161 Words
Once I reach the end of the tree line, I come upon a small city, and there is a sign to my right that reads, “Welcome to Petalburg City!” I immediately notice a Pokémon center directly in front of me, a Poké Mart to my right, and a few houses to the left of me, then as I continue into the city, I notice two ponds; a smaller one behind the store, and the other one is L-shaped resting on the other side of the houses. Since I did not get the chance to look at the store in Oldale, I decide to head over to the store in hopes of finding some different things. As I enter the store, I am immediately disappointed with the lack of options and inventory, so I leave the store, head to the Pokémon center, and hand my Pokémon over to the nurse to be sure they’re all completely healthy. While I am waiting, I look around the center to see several other trainers doing their own things, a food bar on the left side, a computer to the right of the main counter, and a door to the right of the computer that leads to the lodging rooms. “My Pekachu is the best! If you battle me, you’ll see for yourself,” an elderly man’s voice comes from the right side table of the center, and I turn to see a bald elderly man with a Pikachu talking to a young teenage boy with a Pachirisu, both of which I scan to gain their information. “Pekachu?! You just changed one letter…such a lame name, but my Patchy and I will beat you no problem!” The boy scoffs pointing outside, then he runs out of the center with the old man slowly following him and the other people follow as well, so I decide to watch the battle as well. Once everyone is outside the old man finally gets into place. “Let’s go Pekachu!” The old man says as his Pikachu starts running towards the Pachirisu. “Go Patchy! Use quick attack!” The boy shouts, and the Pachirisu darts off towards the Pikachu. “Pekachu, use Blunderbolt!” The old man orders, and the entire crowd, including the boy and his Pachirisu immediately stop and look at the old man as if he were senile, then the Pikachu summons a mighty lightning bolt striking the Pachirisu head on and it knocks it back towards the boy, who catches it as it faints, which shocks everyone, “good job Pekachu, I told you it was really strong!” After laughing at the whole scenario, I walk back inside the center just in time for the nurse to bring my Pokémon out, “you’re timing is impeccable, your Pokémon are fully healed and feeling great, feel free to get some food before setting out,” the nurse smiles as everyone hops off the cart and runs to me. “Hey guys! Thank you miss,” I say hugging my Pokémon as the nurse nods to me and returns to the counter. “Did you get to see that man’s Pekachu? He actually invented a new move with the bond he has with that Pokémon, it’s called Blunderbolt, and it sounds like a joke, but it’s even more powerful than the moves thunderbolt and thunder put together, however, it only works half the time. I must say, it’s impressive what people and Pokémon are capable of when they have really close bonds of friendship,” the nurse says as I walk over to the food bar and start making a bowl for everyone, then I take the bowls over to the left side table, which is empty, and help them up so they can eat. “Eat up, this next route is a little long, but I think we can make it there before this afternoon…I’ll be right back,” I say as they start eating, then I walk back to the food bar, fix myself a plate, return to the table, and start eating with them. While taking my time eating, I take my V-Dex out and play around with it to learn what all functions it has, one of which is a camera that I use to take pictures of my Pokémon individually and as a group, then I notice it has a contact and trainer registry, which I can use to register any other person that has a Pokénav, or something similar, and when it registers any sort of trainer, it also records their trainer card, their current always updated Pokémon lineup, and their achievements. I continue playing around with the V-Dex until I finish eating, then I gather all the dishes, take them over to the waste bin, and set them on top, “you guys ready?” I ask, to which they all agree, so I allow them all to take their places on me and take them outside. Once I leave the center, I hear May and Brendan talking to someone around the corner of the center, so I walk around the west side of the center to see them talking to a man with short black hair outside of the Petalburg gym, then I walk over to join them. “Why can’t we just battle you now?” May asks as I approach from behind them. “You need to gather at least four gym badges to challenge my gym, but you should start in Rustboro with Roxanne, she is normally the one that trainers challenge first, and she helps run the trainer’s school,” the man replies to May’s question. “Hey May, Brendan, what’s going on?” I greet them, and it startles them both as they quickly turn around. “Whoa! Don’t sneak up on us like that!” May squeals holding her chest while the man and I snicker. “You could’ve warned us he was sneaking up behind us dad!” Brendan scolds. “He wasn’t sneaking, he was walking naturally…so is he a friend of yours?” The man asks looking at me and my Pokémon. “Oh yes, sorry, this is Viper, he started his journey with us, and Viper, this is my dad, and Petalburg gym leader Norman,” Brendan introduces me to the man, and we shake hands. “Nice to meet you Viper, you have some very interesting Pokémon,” Norman comments petting Hinoté and Setsei. “You as well, and thank you, this is Hinoté, Setsei, Loomy, and Gallan,” I introduce them while pointing to them accordingly. We stand there talking for a few minutes while Norman gives us some advice and registers his Pokénav with ours, then we head west to the next route while telling our experiences up to this point. “Wow, so you think that N guy you met can talk to Pokémon?” May asks as we approach a beach on the southern part of the route. “Maybe, who knows…but he seemed to understand them pretty well to just have met them,” I reply shrugging and notice a bald elderly man with a large white beard playing with a female Wingull, then the Wingull spots us, flies over, and circles around me, “oh, hello there,” I greet the Wingull lifting my arm up for her to sit on. “Oho! That’s so strange, Peeko doesn’t normally like strangers,” the old man mentions walking over to us. “Hey…aren’t you Mr. Briney?” May asks as I pet Peeko. “Why yes I am, and who might you three be?” Briney replies with a smile. “I’m May, this is Brendan my neighbor, and this is our friend Viper,” May introduces us. “I see, very well, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” Briney bows to us respectfully, and we bow in return, “you must be trainers headed to Rustboro, correct?” He asks, and we each nod watching Peeko and Setsei playing on my arm, “I wish you safe travels, and I have a question for you Viper…may I ask why your Pokémon aren’t in their balls?” He inquires, and they all look at me curiously, putting me on the spot. “Umm…I don’t know, I guess I don’t mind the extra weight on my shoulders, and I enjoy their company,” I respond shrugging. “The reason I ask is that most trainers usually keep their Pokémon in their balls, with the exception of one, but they’re your friends, so you do as please,” Briney explains causing me to think about the topic. “He’s got a point, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a trainer traveling with more than two Pokémon out of their balls…though Hinoté doesn’t have choice,” Brendan adds to Briney’s statement. “That makes sense…so do you guys want to go in your balls while we travel?” I ask looking at everyone, then Loomy and Gallan both agree to it, so I return them to their balls and put them in my pocket. “There’s a small mall in Rustboro where you can get some clothes, equipment, accessories, and trainer gear, and I suggest you get yourself a trainer’s belt of some sort, which is very similar to a utility belt, that way you will have better access to some items and your Pokémon, since most of them have slots for Pokéballs,” Brendan suggests showing me his trainer belt, then we talk with Briney for a few minutes before heading north to Petalburg Woods. Brendan and May go on ahead of me as I take my time exploring the area and battling some wild Pokémon and trainers, then once we enter the woods, I let Gallan out so that I can train with him, Setsei, and Hinoté. I cannot explain how or why I know some form of martial arts, but I share my fighting style and technique with them hoping to help them grow stronger and wiser, not just for normal battling, but also for strategy and everyday life. After I feel that I have taught them all I can for today, I return Gallan to his ball and continue through woods battling trainers and wild Pokémon until we arrive at the end of the woods in front of a small building surrounded by flowers. The building is a flower shop run by three sisters that teach me about berries and give me five of each; Oran berries, Cheri berries, Chesto berries, Pecha berries, Rawst berries, and Aspear berries. After I leave the shop, I explore the area, which is Route 104 North, doing the same as I have been until finally reaching Rustboro City. I am immediately surprised at how big the city is as I head straight to the Pokémon center, have them nurse take my Pokémon, and sit down taking my V-Dex out to search for the locations of the Rustboro gym, Trainer’s School, and the mall that Brendan mentioned. Once the nurse returns with everyone, I grab them and straight for the mall. “I’m sure glad we took our time getting here, if we hadn’t battled all those trainers, I don’t think we would have had the money to do any real shopping,” I chuckle as we approach a two story building with a glass roof and a few different brand logos posted along the walls, “also, I want to apologize for working you guys too hard, but I have a special treat in mind to make up for it,” I mention entering the mall to see four different shops taking up the four corners of the building, a decently sized pillar in the middle with a buffet circling around it, and eight kiosks strategically placed to draw attention. I let Gallan and Loomy out of their balls while putting Setsei and Hinoté on the floor so they can walk around with me, then we begin to explore the mall, and I check my V-Dex to see how much money I actually have. It takes me a few minutes to figure out which application to use, and I am shocked to see ₽1,045,694 in my account, which causes me to figure up what all I had earned from battling trainers, which is ₽45,694, “so where did the one million come from?” I ask aloud in a mumble, then I shrug and continue browsing around. I wind up purchasing a black trainer belt with a single shoulder harness, a pair of black trainer gloves with ultramarine accents and the thumb and ring finger missing on the left hand, a deep metallic blue satin dress shirt, a black V cut vest with a white silk back, a pair of ripped black denim pants, a silver box chain necklace, a black box chain necklace with a strange silver charm that looks to be missing a gemstone, a rose gold cuff bracelet similar to the necklace charm, and a white belt with a black buckle similar to the others missing a gemstone. As we finish shopping in the last store, I notice the final kiosk has watches of all sorts, so I walk over to it and look at their inventory until I find a black polygonal metal cuff that stretches to fit any wrist with a silver multifunctional watch connected to the cuff with silver swivel clasps. “You have a good eye, that is no ordinary watch, it has an opening on the bottom to put a Keystone in, and it automatically updates to whatever region you’re in so that you always have the correct time,” the clerk explains taking the watch out of the case and handing it to me, and I purchase it without question, then I go to the restroom to change into the clothes I purchased, put the silver necklace and watch on, put the gloves and belt on. Once I am done, I put the black necklace on Hinoté, the bracelet on Setsei, and the belt on Gallan, then I take them to buffet bar in the middle pillar, allow them to pick what they want to eat, and sit at a table with them to eat. It is nearly sunset when we finally leave the mall, so we head over to the west side of the city and sit on the ledge above the water of the sea to watch as the sun slowly disappears over the horizon. “I don’t know about you guys, but I had a lot of fun, I feel so lucky to have you all and be able to spend my time with you,” I admit holding Setsei in my arms while Hinoté is sitting in front of me and Loomy is sitting with Gallan to my left. They all seem to agree that they also had fun, and I also hear something approaching from behind us, so I turn around to see a mint green Rowlet hopping towards us carrying a letter in its beak, and the letter is six sided triangle shaped, or three point star, “oh, hello there, is that letter for me?” I ask looking around for the Rowlet’s trainer. “Row letrow let!” It chirps giving me the letter, then I open it up and begin reading. “Dear Viper, tell Hinoté, Loomy, and Setsei I said hey! And I noticed you have a new Ralts, congratulations! So if you’re reading this, then Nyte has made it to you successfully, and I want you to meet Nyte, she is my Rowlet that I met while climbing trees to watch y…never mind that…” I open the second fold, “I heard from someone that you said you wanted to have someone traveling with you, so if that’s true, and you would want me to join you, then send something back with Nyte that has your answer,” I open the third fold, “I really enjoy spending time with you, and I would love to travel with you…I also hope that you regain your memory. I hope to hear from you soon, Leila,” she ends the letter with a beautifully articulated signature, and I inspect the rest of the letter to see if there is anything else on it, but it does not have any other writing, however, it does have the smell of honey and Roselia petals, “it’s nice to meet you Nyte, how do you like Leila so far?” I ask the Rowlet while putting the letter in my journal with the others, and it chirps happily, then I tear a piece of paper out of the journal and rummage through my backpack looking for a pen or pencil, but I am unable to find one. As Hinoté realizes what I am looking for, he plucks a blue feather from his tail, chars the calamus, and hands it to me, “thanks buddy,” I smile petting his head, then I use the feather to write, “Dear Leila, I’m happy to see you have a Pokémon now, and I would really like to have you join me, but I expect you to stay with me, not run off every chance you get. I will stay here until 10:00pm, and Nyte knows where I am, so I hope to see you soon, Viper,” I sign my name with the best handwriting I can muster, then I fold the letter into a two dimensional lotus flower, stick the feather into it, and hand it to Nyte, “thank you for bringing me the letter, and for taking that one to her, be safe,” I say petting Nyte before she hops away, then I turn back to the sunset to see the sun is gone, but the stars are magnificently bright and beautiful, so I lay back resting my head on my hands as Setsei lays on my chest and the others lay on the grass. Thirty minutes later, I hear Nyte hopping back to us with a set of footsteps alongside her, and when I look up, I see Leila and Nyte approaching us, “good afternoon, how are you?” I ask in greeting as she stops standing directly over my head looking down at me. “I am doing well, what about you?” Leila greets me in return as I pat the ground beside me. “Not bad, I had a strange day, but I made a new friend, Gallan,” I reply pointing to Gallan, “would you like to watch the stars with me?” I ask ask she greets and pets my Pokémon, then she lays down beside me. “Thought you’d never ask!” She smiles laying beside me, and Nyte wobbles around meeting everyone, “so I read your letter, are you sure you want me to travel with you?” She inquires turning her head to look at me. “I wanted you to when we first met, and even more when we actually got to hang out, so yes,” I respond turning to face her, and all of my Pokémon agree with me, which causes her to blush slightly. “I’m so happy! Thank you!” She squeals hugging me tightly, “so what are your plans for tomorrow?” She asks letting go. “I thought I would explore the city a bit, check out that huge building over there, visit the school thing, challenge the gym, and probably take you to the mall with me to get you some stuff…did you have anything in mind?” I respond with a question. “If you had said no, then I would just keep following you from a distance, but since you said yes, I want to do whatever you’re doing,” she replies with a nervous grin biting her thumbnail. “Not that I’m complaining, but why have you been following me?” I ask feeling it is probably too soon to ask. “I don’t want to answer that just yet, but you will find out soon enough, anyways, so I found out about this new Pokémon that they discovered running around the regions, and it was supposedly spotted in Lilycove,” she mentions pointing in the wrong direction. “That’s cool, what is it called?” I ask moving her hand to the correct direction with a chuckle. “I heard some people calling it Zera something…it’s supposed to be like one of the fastest Pokémon ever, and I think it’s an electric type,” she responds as a shooting star soars across the sky with a magnificent rainbow sparkling tail, “wow pretty! They say when you see a shooting star to make a wish, and it could come true…” at that moment, the star makes an immediate U-turn, which interrupts her, and flies back in the direction it came from, but this time it looks much closer, so we both sit up. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shooting star do that before,” I mention as we watch it soar over us again, this time a bit slower. “Do you think it might be a Pokémon?” She asks just before it turns around again and starts flying directly towards us, so I take my V-Dex out and try to identify it. “I’m not sure, I can’t get an accurate reading on it yet,” I reply as it gets closer and brighter, then the V-Dex suddenly pings displaying the information. “Ho-Oh, the legendary Rainbow Pokémon, it is said to fly the skies around the world leaving a rainbow trail behind it and it will reveal itself to a pure-hearted trainer by shining its bright seven colored wings,” the V-Dex informs us as the Ho-Oh continues to get closer until it stops directly in front of us as a beautiful glowing mountainous bird majestically flapping its wings. We sit there in silence, awestruck by the sight of it until I finally speak up. “Hey there…you’re Ho-Oh right? How are you doing today?” I greet it with a smile, and it shrieks calmly, “I’ll take that as a good…so what brings you to us?” I ask, then it lands in front of us, begins glowing with a very bright rainbow color, and gestures for Hinoté to come to it. Hinoté stands up and nervously walks over to the Ho-Oh, and it bends over curling its wings around him blocking our view, but I can tell that there is an inferno of raging fire swirling around inside the wing wall with blue, purple, pink, black, and white colored flames. After around five minutes of the strange event, Ho-Oh raises up retracting its wings to reveal Hinoté glowing with flames, then Ho-Oh gestures to me, so I hand Setsei over to Leila, stand up, and approach it smiling as I inspect its body, “I can’t say that I could survive flames like that, but I do think you’re an amazingly beautiful Pokémon,” I compliment it as it plucks a single feather from its left wing, then it hands the feather to me, “I wish I had a gift to give you in return…” it interrupts me by poking my chest with its beak. “I think Ho-Oh is saying that you already have a gift, which is your heart and the love you give to your Pokémon,” Leila comments as Ho-Oh and our Pokémon agree with her. “Why thank you, I will always keep it with me,” I say smiling, then it bows its head to me before taking off and flying away, and I put the feather in my journal to keep it safe, “that was strange wasn’t it?” I say turning around to face the others.
