The wolves were retreating, but they weren’t the real threat. “We’ve only just started,” she said quietly, her voice almost lost in the wind. “The council will come for us now. It’s only a matter of time before they send their enforcers. They’ll want to make an example of us.” Kaelen’s expression hardened, but there was a quiet resolve in his gaze. “Let them come,” he said. “We’re ready. And no one—no one—is going to separate us.” Lena met his gaze, the bond between them growing stronger by the second. But even as she felt the pull of their connection, a part of her—her human side—still struggled. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for this. Ready to stand against everything she had ever known, everything that had been forced on her. But standing with Kaelen, facing the council, made something inside her stir. Maybe she was ready. The sky above them darkened as clouds gathered ominously, the wind picking up speed. A sense of foreboding filled the air, and Lena’s senses screamed that danger was imminent. Her heart skipped in her chest. “We need to go,” she said urgently, her voice tight. “We can’t stay here.” Kaelen nodded, his eyes scanning the horizon. He could feel it too—the eyes of the council, always watching, always waiting. They had made their move, and now it was their turn. The journey to their temporary safe haven was tense and fraught with the awareness of the danger that was drawing nearer. They moved swiftly through the night, Kaelen’s presence a constant shield at Lena’s side. His confidence, his unwavering belief in their cause, was contagious, even though doubt gnawed at her heart. As they reached a secluded area on the outskirts of Kaelen’s territory, a place hidden deep within the forest, Lena exhaled a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. “We’ll stay here for a while,” Kaelen said, his voice soft but filled with resolve. “It’s safe for now. We’ll have time to prepare.” Lena nodded, though her mind was far from at ease. “We’ll need more than time. We need a plan. The council won’t just let us slip away. If they find us—” “They won’t,” Kaelen interrupted firmly. “I won’t let them.” He stepped closer, his warmth filling the air between them as he reached out to gently brush a strand of hair from her face. His touch was electric, soothing the tumultuous feelings inside her for a moment. “We’ll fight,” Kaelen said, his voice fierce with determination. “Together.” Lena swallowed, her heart heavy with the realization that this fight wasn’t just about survival—it was about defying everything that had been dictated for her life. The pack, the council, all of them. They had never seen her as more than a tool or a weapon, but with Kaelen, she was more than that. She was a partner. She was his mate. “I won’t let you down,” Lena whispered, her voice trembling with the weight of her promise. “I’ll fight with you, Kaelen. But we need allies. If the council wants to destroy us, they’ll need to go through more than just us.” Kaelen’s eyes darkened, a hint of strategy flashing across his face. “I know. We’ll rally the others. There are other species who’ve had enough of the council’s rule. It’s time they joined us. The packs, the dragons, the witches—everyone who’s been oppressed. We’ll make sure they know they’re not alone.” Lena nodded, feeling the weight of the responsibility that was now on their shoulders. The council was powerful, but so were they. Together, they had a chance. And this time, they weren’t running.
