I retraced my steps from the river and the bridge and veered off to the left to visit the house of Joan of Arc. I have to admit I could hardly believe my eyes. Whatever trees or garden had once surrounded it were now gone, and the house stood stark but elegant within its own space. Joan’s house in 1995.
