“What was the ceremony like?”
“It started with Charles entering the cathedral of Reims at 3 a.m. to keep the traditional vigil through the night. At 9 a.m. the ritual began. Four horsemen in full armour rode to the Church of Saint Rémi, where the Holy Oil was kept. One of them was my old comrade in arms, Gilles de Rais. You now know him as Bluebeard. The abbot of Saint Rémi carried the Holy Oil on horseback and, accompanied by the four knights, rode into the cathedral right up to the choir and presented the oil to the Archbishop of Reims. Charles then took the coronation oath to protect the Church and the people and to govern with justice and mercy. Alençon then knighted him. He was anointed with the Holy Oil and crowned.
