chapter 16 The breaking point

744 Words
The sun was finally out. For the first time in weeks, the sky over Westbridge looked alive again. Students filled the courtyard, laughing, taking pictures, running between classes. Everything looked normal — except for Olivia. She sat under the old oak tree with a book open on her lap, eyes distant. Her mind wasn’t in the story — it was still replaying his voice. Ethan’s voice. The way he said her name like it meant something. But meaning had turned into silence. --- Tasha’s POV Tasha had always been the loud one — always laughing, always talking. But lately, she’d been quieter. Watching. Listening. Especially when Ryan was around. There was something about the way he moved — calm, deliberate, with this quiet danger under the surface. Every time he smiled, her chest tightened, though she tried not to show it. > “You’re staring,” Vanessa said suddenly, sliding beside her on the bench. Tasha jumped. “W-what?” Vanessa smirked. “At Ryan. You’ve been doing it for the past five minutes.” > “I wasn’t—” “Relax,” Vanessa said, swirling her iced coffee. “You’re not the only one who finds him interesting.” Tasha frowned. “You sound like you’re planning something.” Vanessa tilted her head, eyes glinting. “Maybe I am. Maybe I just like watching people reveal themselves.” > “You really enjoy stirring trouble, don’t you?” “Trouble is the only thing that makes this place fun.” She stood up, brushing imaginary dust off her skirt. “But if you’re smart, you’ll stop pretending you don’t like him. Secrets have a way of eating people alive.” Tasha watched her walk away, feeling her heart beat faster. > “I don’t like him,” she muttered — but even she didn’t believe that anymore. --- Ryan’s POV Ryan leaned against the railing outside the dorm, scrolling through files on his phone. He’d finally gotten something concrete — a medical report from a private clinic, dated two years ago. Patient name: Ethan Gray Condition: Memory reconstruction therapy — post-traumatic amnesia Note: Do not expose yourself to emotional triggers related to the incident. His grip tightened on the phone. So that’s why Ethan’s been so unstable. Whatever happened to him before Westbridge — it wasn’t normal. And Vanessa knew. Ryan closed his eyes, piecing everything together. If Ethan’s memory ever came back completely, it could destroy them all. --- Olivia’s POV By evening, she was in her dorm room, trying to convince herself she was fine. She even smiled in the mirror once or twice — but it looked forced. Tasha was out for her study group. The silence in the room was heavy. Her phone buzzed. A message. No name. Just a number. > Unknown: “You deserve to know the truth.” Attached was a single photo. Olivia’s blood ran cold as she opened it. It was a picture of Ethan, standing in what looked like a hospital hallway — pale, disoriented, with a band on his wrist that read “Subject 47B.” Her hands shook. The timestamp was from a year before they met. > “What… is this?” she whispered. Before she could think, another message came. > Unknown: “Ask him about Project Revival.” Her heart stopped. Project Revival. She’d never heard those words before — but they felt like something she wasn’t supposed to know. --- Vanessa’s POV Vanessa watched her phone light up from across the café. She smiled faintly as Olivia’s message opened the photo she’d sent from an anonymous number. > “Perfect,” she whispered. “Let’s see what you do with that, sweetheart.” She wasn’t doing this just for fun anymore. If Ethan’s secret came out — everyone would pay. Especially him. --- Later That Night Ryan paced his dorm room, unease growing in his chest. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Vanessa had already moved her next piece. He checked his phone again — no messages. Then his phone buzzed. A text from Olivia. > Olivia: “Ryan, can we talk? It’s about Ethan.” He stared at it for a long second, then typed back: > Ryan: “Where are you?” Olivia: “Library. Alone.” He grabbed his jacket and left immediately. Outside, thunder rolled across the sky. The storm had found its way back — and this time, it wasn’t leaving.
