Karls POV
The night had long passed, but Karl had not moved from where he stood, deep within the forest shadows. His cloak of darkness concealed him, his aura suppressed, yet his thoughts were anything but calm.
Kane paced violently inside him. She is different… her scent feels different and strange… it calms and ignites me all at once.
Karl’s jaw clenched, his golden eyes burning faintly in the dark. “She’s a child,” he muttered under his breath. “No wolf. Not yet eighteen. Why, Kane? "Why did he react this way to her?”
The great beast inside him only growled louder, restless. Karl shut his eyes, replaying the moment he had seen her bruised, cornered, but standing tall. The branch in her hand had been nothing against three rogues, yet she had fought. She hadn’t begged, hadn’t screamed. Even when the enraged rogues leaped for her throat, her calm had been… infuriatingly admirable. Her courage and bravery ignited a strange sense of pride in him, something he had not felt before.
And then Kane, his battle-hardened wolf who had never given a damm about anyone or yielded control without his will, had surged forward, ripping through the rogues before Karl could think.
For the first time in centuries, Karl had not been in control.
“Why her?” His voice was low, strained. “Why now?”
He had left his throne, abandoned his pack to his beta, and wandered through countless realms searching for… something. A cure, an answer, perhaps even a reason to exist, something kept pulling him like fate calling unto him. He had encountered witches, demons, even the whispers of gods. Nothing stirred him. Nothing touched him.
Until now. Until her.
Kane growled again, demanding. Karl’s lips curved into a humorless smile. “No. Something is wrong somewhere, even the cold Kane is affected by her.''
Yet even as he said the words, his chest ached with a pull he had not felt in a lifetime.
He exhaled harshly, pulling back into the shadows. “Perhaps… it is time I watched her more closely. Perhaps the fates are trying to tell me something or to play this trick on me.”
Flashback – Amelia
The rogue attack still replayed in Amelia’s mind as she returned to the Pack’s territory. Every heartbeat of the night still throbbed in her chest; their snarls, the flash of claws, and then… him.
The black wolf.
Her fingers brushed over her chest absentmindedly as she walked through the gates. No one could see the tremor in her hands or the storm in her eyes. She couldn’t tell them. Not yet.
Her brother, Caleb, rushed to her side the moment he spotted her. “Amelia! "Where have you been? "I’ve been looking everywhere.” His tone was sharp, protective, the way it was always with her.
“I just… needed air,” she replied, forcing a smile. “I didn’t go far.”
Caleb’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t push further. Instead, his gaze shifted behind her. Amelia followed it and froze.
Selena.
The girl walked toward them gracefully, her silver hair shining under the lantern light, her lips curved into a delicate smile. To anyone watching, she was perfection polished, gentle, the epitome of a passionate true friend.
“Amelia,” Selena said warmly, reaching out to squeeze her hands. “It’s so good to see you back safely. I worried when I didn’t find you in the hall earlier.”
Her voice dripped with sweetness, but Amelia caught the flicker in her eyes the glint of mockery and calculation. She knew her true nature. In her past life, Selena had been her confidant, her so-called childhood best friend and sister, until the dagger of betrayal slid between her heart.
Amelia forced her lips into a smile. “I’m touched by your concern, Selena.”
Selena tilted her head, her expression flawless. “Of course, sister. We must always look after each other.”
Amelia’s stomach churned. In another life, she would have been fooled again, lured into trusting the serpent that smiled like a dove. But not this time.
Not this life.
As she exchanged pleasantries, her thoughts drifted back to the woods. To the black wolf who had stood between her and death. She didn’t know his name, but she couldn’t forget his eyes. The spark between them had felt alive, as though the universe itself was pulling her to him.
And yet… Damien her was supposed to be mate she felt nothing. Even now, she could see him across the courtyard, his strong frame surrounded by warriors as he gave orders. He looked powerful, commanding, everything an Alpha should be.
But when she looked at him, her chest felt nothing but cold emptiness.
No warmth. No pull. Nothing.
Her breath caught. Then why him? Why the shadow?
Amelia’s POV
Amelia jolted awake, drenched in sweat. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, the images of golden eyes haunting her even in her sleep.
Her fingers brushed her neck, remembering the rogue’s fangs that had nearly ended her life again. But it was the black wolf she could not shake.
That power. That aura. That spark. It was very intimidating and powerful unlike any wolf even Alphas she has met even in her previous life.
Her heart thudded as she sat up, staring out the window of her chamber. “Who are you?” I dont remember meeting such mysterious being in my previous life'' she whispered to the space.
A knock on the door startled her.
“Amelia?” A soft voice floated in.
Selena.
Amelia stiffened but forced a small smile as the door creaked open. Selena, glided in gracefully, her eyes full of concern though Amelia knew better.
“Oh dear, you’re awake. You look pale… are you unwell?” Selena’s voice dripped with sweetness as she reached for Amelia’s hand.
Amelia gently pulled away. “I’m fine.”
Selena’s eyes flickered, just for a moment, before her lips curved again. “You’ve been through a lot lately. You shouldn’t wander into the forest alone. It’s dangerous.”
The words sounded caring, but Amelia caught the slight twist of her lips, the glint in her eyes that betrayed her. Fake concern, layered with envy.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Amelia replied flatly she was trying to hold her self back from punching her fake face.
Selena’s smile faltered for a second. “Good. get up and get ready, Alpha Damien will hold a gathering in the hall. You should attend. It’ll be… enlightening.”
With that, Selena left, her perfume lingering like poison.
Amelia exhaled, her chest tight. The name Damien still stirred old wounds, but she had no choice. If she wants to succed with her plans, she would play her part and pretend all is well. Only this time, she would not be the naive fool.
Blood Moon Pack Hall
The grand hall buzzed with voices. Warriors, omegas, and nobles alike filled the room as Damien strode in, exuding arrogance. Selena was glued to his side, her smile sharp as a dagger.
Amelia stood near Caleb, her brother, her expression calm though her mind raced and wondered the reason for the sudden gathering.
And then
The doors at the far end creaked open.
The chatter died instantly.
A tall figure stepped inside, cloaked in black, golden eyes glowing faintly beneath the hood. His aura was suffocating, commanding, dangerous. Every wolf in the room stiffened, instinctively lowering their gaze unable to look straight and some knees gave way to the ground unable to handle the suffocating presence.
Even Damien froze, his jaw tightening and his whole being trembled but he fought to remain calm.
The air grew thick. The unknown stranger removed his hood.
Golden eyes. Sharp, merciless features. His eyes moved around the hall as if searching for something as everyone lowered their heads afraid to meet his gaze and then across the hall his eyes met with a little curious eyes.
It was him.
Amelia’s breath caught in her throat, her fingers digging into her dress. The shadow from the forest.
''What was he doing here?''
