The Stranger in the Shadows

1125 Words
The great hall of Blood Moon fell into a suffocating silence. The stranger stepped forward, the heavy cloak parting just enough to reveal the golden glint of his eyes. The power radiating from him pressed against every wolf present, ancient and raw, making spines bend and lungs tighten. And then a sound shattered the silence. A chair scraped harshly against the floor as the former Alpha, gray-haired and weathered, staggered to his feet. His eyes widened in recognition before he bowed his head low. “My lord…” greetings lord Duskbane'' His voice trembled, breaking the quiet like thunder. “It… is really you.” A wave of gasps rippled through the pack. Wolves turned to one another, whispers erupting. Him? Could it be? Though many had never seen the man before, they all knew the stories. The name that carried fear through generations. The Alpha of a pack said to be older than memory, a pack that lived hidden in shadow and blood, never mingling with the outside world. Karl Duskbane. The room shifted into stunned awe. Some wolves lowered their gazes out of instinct; others stared openly, fear lacing their curiosity. Damien’s jaw clenched, though his eyes flickered with unease and fear. His pride as Alpha wavered against the weight of the man standing before him, but he forced his voice to steady. “You honor us with your presence,” Damien said stiffly, though his fingers twitched at his side. “But to what do we owe it? Surely your… duties keep you far from Blood Moon lands.” All eyes locked on Karl, waiting. The stranger finally lowered his hood. Dark hair framed a face carved with sharp edges, devilishly handsome but cold with unreadable calm. His golden gaze swept across the hall, pausing briefly on Amelia. Her heart stopped in her chest at the weight of his gaze. When Karl spoke, his voice was low, deep, commanding without effort. “I am passing through,” he said simply. “Personal business brought me this way. I will remain in your territory for a time.” A collective breath released, though unease still thickened the air. Passing through? That was all? Wolves exchanged wary glances. His presence felt too heavy, too significant for such a casual reason. But none dared question him. Selena’s eyes, however, were scaning through the hall. She tilted her head innocently, lips curved in a sweet smile, but inside her mind raced and fear held her. Passing through? No.But it seemed like He looked at her. He looked at Amelia. 'Wait dont tell me she offended him but they just met right'' her mind ran different scenerios. Amelia shifted uncomfortably under Karls watchful stare. Her pulse pounded in her ears, and she clenched her hands at her side. Damien’s gaze darted toward Amelia too, just in time to catch the way her eyes lingered on Karl. His jaw tightened something inside of him stired up an unease. The Old Alpha swallowed hard, nodding quickly. “Of course, my Lord. You are welcome here for as long as you deem fit. Blood Moon Pack will accommodate you with whatever you require.” The Lycan King moved toward the Old Alpha’s side. “See to it that I am undisturbed. My affairs are my own,” he declared, his voice final. The matter was closed. At least, to everyone else. Later that evening, outside the crowded hall, Amelia found herself face-to-face with Damien. The young Alpha carried his usual arrogance, but his jaw was tight, his eyes stormy. “You didn’t attend to my laundry.” His voice was sharp, accusing. Amelia blinked, startled. “What?” she almost forgot that in her previous life she had been the one who catered for his needs even before him marked her as mate. “Are you deaf,” Damien snapped, stepping closer. “Amelia you seem to have forgotten your roles so quick''. Her chest tightened, both at his words and the sharpness in his tone. Once, she might have apologized instantly, begged for forgiveness to soothe his temper. But this time, something in her stiffened. “I have been busy,” she said quietly, refusing to lower her gaze. Damien’s eyes narrowed, the bruise to his pride unmistakable. For as long as he could remember, Amelia’s world had revolved around him her loyalty, her care, her submission. But today, she seemed… different. Defiant. Selena’s voice drifted from the shadows, soft and poisoned with faux concern. “Damien, maybe she’s just overwhelmed and tired. You know Amelia always care about you.” She smiled sweetly at Amelia, but her eyes glittered with something else. Damien’s jaw clenched. “You’d better remember your place, Amelia. Don’t make me remind you the coming of age ceremony is around the corner and dont piss me off into choosing another Mate and Luna.” Amelia’s fists tightened at her side, her heart aching with the familiar sting of his disregard. His arrogance and pride has not changed even in two life time,he always sees her as someone beneath him. Yet this time, beneath the ache, something new stirred. A spark of anger. Selena’s voice drifted like honey, smooth and deceptively sweet, “There’s no need to be so harsh,” she murmured, her hand brushing Damien’s arm as though to soothe him. “You know Amelia doesn’t mean any harm. She’s just… overwhelmed. She turned to Amelia then, her smile bright and tender. “Right, Amelia? You were only taking a few days off. You’ve always been such a gentle soul and hardworking.” Amelia forced herself to listen, though something inside her recoiled. Selena’s tone was flawless, her eyes glowing with affection. Yet beneath it, Amelia caught the faint glimmer of scorn. Damien exhaled, shoulders still rigid. “You always make excuses for her,” he muttered, though his tone had cooled slightly under Selena’s touch. ''No problem am going to give her another chance to make up for her mistakes, you go collect the midnight snow flower herb for me i need it to prepare a portion'' he ordered. With that, he allowed Selena to guide him away, leaving Amelia standing alone in the cold courtyard. She pressed her hands against the stone railing, her chest heaving. His words carved deep, reopening wounds she thought she’d sealed with her rebirth. In her previous life she has brave grave danger to get the herb for him loosing one of her fingers in the process and when she returned battered, her clothes filled with blood stains. He looked at her with disdain and didnt even spell her a glance at her wounds. Yet beneath the pain this time, another flame burned hotter. Defiance.
