Chapter 003

Anastasia’s POV My heart picked up a pace and my worries vanished as the handsome man in the bar started walking towards me, his eyes never leaving mine. He moved with an air of confidence that made my heart race. When he got closer, I could see a hunger in his eyes, as if he wanted to devour me. Suddenly, he reached out to me and took my face in his hands, his gaze piercing into mine. The moment his hands touched my face, I immediately felt an electric current flow through me. Before I knew it, he leaned in and his lips met mine. First, my eyes popped out in surprise, realizing he was one of those men who got drunk in the bar and just walked up to any girl they saw, to harass them. But then his lips tasted so good and slowly, I gave in and we began to kiss more deeply and passionately. The world around me just faded away. A haze of emotions overwhelmed me and soon, we barely made it out of the bar, stumbling together into the nearest motel. Every touch and kiss felt like fire, burning us both into each other. The intensity of our connection was so intense, and we didn’t waste any second when we got to the room. Clothes were quickly pulled and discarded, in an instant we fell into bed, lost in each other’s arms. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Every touch sent shivers down my spine, and every kiss made my heart race. For me, it had felt like the world outside just ceased to exist, and it was just us, lost in a storm of raw and intimate passion. After a moment naked in each other’s arms, my body gave out and with the help of the alcohol, I completely lost track of time. … I woke up in my bed, disoriented and confused with my head slightly pounding. It must have been hours, and the last thing I remembered was kissing a man at a bar. But somehow, now I was back at home, and he was nowhere to be seen. ‘How did I get here?’ I asked myself, fearing the worse had happened. I didn’t have time to think hard about it as Mom immediately barged into my room. “Anastasia, get up! You’re going to be late for school!” she screamed. She stopped when she saw my shocked expression. “Are you okay?” she asked, her tone going soft. “I’m… yeah, yeah, just a weird dream,” I lied, trying to shake off the confusion. I quickly got out of bed and started getting dressed. Mom remained at the door, her eyes trailing me. “Listen, I want to apologize for yesterday.” She then said, breaking the silence “I was harsh, and I didn’t mean to upset you. Your attitude towards my marriage with Silas worries me, but I understand why you might be reluctant to welcome another man into your life after what happened to your father.” I paused, pulling on my shirt, and then meeting her gaze. “It’s okay, Mom. I’m not holding it against you for wanting to move on. I know it hasn’t been easy for you either.” She smiled, a small relief in her eyes. “Thank you for understanding. I just hope you and Silas might bond over time.” She then said. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes, though I tried to keep it light. “Don’t hold your breath.” I joked at her comment, though not totally joking. She laughed softly, shaking her head. “Well, we can always hope.” She replied. “Hey, Silas has somehow managed to convince his son, Jed, to join us for breakfast today. It would mean a lot if you could come down soon.” She concluded. “Alright, I’ll be there in a minute,” I promised. She left, and my mind slid back to the events of the previous night. How had I gotten home? I wondered, thinking hard about it but nothing came. Dragging my thoughts back, I quickly finished getting ready for school, brushing my hair and tying it back in a neat ponytail. My mind was still racing from the events with the man, but I pushed the thoughts aside and headed downstairs. As I descended the stairs, I stopped in my tracks. Sitting right there at the table with Mom and Silas was the same man I had met at the bar and slept with the previous day. My heart pounded in my chest, a combination of shock, fear, and confusion taking over my whole body. “Ah, good morning, Anastasia,” Silas greeted, not noticing my reaction. “Jed, this is Anastasia.” The man looked up briefly, his expression indifferent. He stared at me for a few seconds before returning to his food, not saying anything, acting as if he didn’t recognize me. I was stunned. How could he not recognize me? I felt a sense of anger and hurt at the same time. Mom, sensing the tension, looked at me. “Is everything alright, Anastasia?” she asked. “Yeah, everything’s fine,” I lied, looking at her. I felt really confused within. This was without a doubt the same man I had met yesterday, I could still feel the strange and powerful connection between us. But he was pretending not to know me, and it was infuriating. As we ate, I couldn’t get myself to eat much with him seated across from me. Mom asked and I just said I wasn’t hungry. Silas then cleared his throat. “Jed, why don’t you drop Anastasia off at school today?” he asked. Jed looked at me once more, his expression soured as he obviously didn’t like the idea, but he nodded reluctantly and looked away. “Sure.” I grabbed my backpack but then excused myself and went upstairs to pick up my notebook I’d forgotten. As I walked, my thoughts stirred. I asked myself why was Jed pretending not to know me? Was he really that much of a jerk, or was there something else going on? The confusion ate at me, but I forced myself to focus on the day ahead, perhaps I would get a reasonable explanation from him on our way to school. When I came back down, I found the room empty and the front door open. I then stepped outside to see Jed driving away in the car, leaving me behind. Anger and hurt formed inside me. I couldn’t believe how unlucky I was when it came to men and finding my mate. The one person who I’d had any intimate encounter with for a while, whom I’d secretly hoped turned out being my mate, decided to be a complete jerk. I took a deep breath, holding myself not to cry. I couldn’t let him get to me, not like this. I squared my shoulders and started walking to school, determined to face the day strongly despite everything.
