Chapter 14: Training and Observation

560 Words
The morning sun filtered through the high trees surrounding the inn, painting golden streaks across the training grounds. Diana mounted Midnight, feeling the familiar, comforting shift of the horse beneath her. Her muscles tensed in anticipation, every movement precise and controlled. Today’s training would not be just for skill—it was for observation, though she didn’t yet know by whom. Victoria stood beside the training fence, arms crossed, eyes glinting with excitement. “You know, Diana, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these spectators can feel how fast you move without even seeing you.” Diana smirked. “I’m not sure I want to impress anyone too early. Let’s focus on the drills first.” She spurred Midnight forward, weaving through cones and jumping small obstacles with ease. Each landing was soft and precise, each turn smooth as silk. Unbeknownst to her, Dylan and his parents observed from the treeline, concealed by magic that allowed them to watch without being seen. His dragon, a massive creature with scales like molten gold, hovered just beyond the trees, wings tucked close, eyes glowing faintly as it studied Diana. “She’s strong… faster than I expected,” Dylan murmured, watching as Diana executed a series of spins and jumps with flawless timing. Yet when he tried to sense her fully, the barrier blocked him, muting her presence. His jaw tightened. “Why can’t I sense her fully?” The Dragon Queen shook her head slightly. “Patience, son. The child’s magic is young but powerful. Someone placed a barrier… intentionally. You will discover why soon enough.” As Diana dismounted for a brief rest, she wiped her brow and took a deep breath. “Something feels… odd,” she murmured. “It’s like someone is watching, but I can’t see them.” Victoria grinned, leaning on the fence. “You’re not imagining things. Aaron said the Dragon Clan arrived yesterday… and they don’t just travel for tea.” Aaron stepped forward, arms folded. “They observe carefully. The king and his family will assess your skills, Diana. But don’t worry—they are not hostile. Think of it as a… test.” Diana mounted Midnight again, determination flaring in her chest. The next series of drills included not just agility and speed but magical reflex exercises—sparks of light danced around her hands as she practiced controlling her power, focusing energy without unleashing it. From the treeline, Dylan’s eyes flickered with interest, his red-gold gaze tracking her every move. The dragon shifted slightly, wings brushing the air, and let out a soft rumble. “She is… extraordinary,” it murmured in a low, ancient language, only partially translatable by Dylan. Diana’s pulse quickened. She didn’t understand why she could feel the presence more strongly now, but the tension was thrilling rather than frightening. Every glance, every subtle magical ripple, hinted at something greater—a destiny tied to someone she hadn’t met fully yet. By the time the sun reached its zenith, Diana was drenched in sweat, muscles sore but her spirit alight. She dismounted, brushing Midnight’s mane. Victoria clapped her hands. “That was… flawless. Even the invisible spectators would be impressed.” Diana smiled faintly, her eyes scanning the treeline. Something ancient was there, powerful, observing—and she knew that her journey had only just begun.
