Chapter 38: The Line that Blurs

703 Words
The courtyard was quieter than usual. Not empty—just absent of distractions. Diana stepped into the training circle, her focus sharper than it had been in days. The faint glow of the seal beneath her feet responded almost instantly, as though it had grown used to her presence. Or wary of it. “You’re early.” She didn’t need to turn. “Didn’t think you’d notice,” Diana replied. Dylan stepped into view, his movements calm, unhurried. “You’re easier to read than you think.” She scoffed lightly. “That’s not reassuring.” “It’s not meant to be.” Silence settled between them—but it wasn’t awkward. It was charged. Diana exhaled slowly and raised her hand slightly, allowing the energy to gather the way she had practiced. This time, it came easier. Smoother. But not entirely stable. Dylan watched closely. “You’re holding back.” “I’m controlling it.” “There’s a difference.” Diana frowned. “You always say things like that without explaining.” “Because you already understand,” he replied. That irritated her more than it should have. The energy flickered. Diana’s breath hitched slightly as the familiar shift began again—subtle, but wrong. Not pain. Not chaos. Just… slipping. Dylan stepped closer. “Don’t fight it,” he said quietly. “I’m not—” “It’s in your shoulders,” he added. “You tense before it rises.” Diana hesitated. Then, reluctantly, she relaxed. The change was immediate. The energy steadied. Her breath slowed. “…That worked again,” she admitted. Dylan was closer now. Too close. “You resist instinct,” he said. Diana met his gaze. “And you don’t?” A pause. Then— “Not when it matters.” The words lingered. Diana swallowed slightly, suddenly aware of how little space was between them now. The air felt different again—sharper, heavier. Her focus slipped. The energy spiked. Dylan reacted instantly. His hand came to her waist—firm, grounding, pulling her slightly toward him to steady the surge. Everything stopped. Diana’s breath caught. Not from the energy. From him. The contact was different this time. Closer. Warmer. Her hands instinctively braced against his chest—not pushing him away, not pulling him closer. Just… there. The energy between them didn’t just stabilize. It aligned. Dylan’s grip tightened just slightly. His gaze dropped—briefly—to her lips. Diana noticed. Her heart skipped. The world narrowed. No training. No kingdom. No expectations. Just— This. Her breath softened. So did his. The space between them shrank— “Diana.” The voice cut through the moment like a blade. Cold. Controlled. Sharp. They both turned. Kaelen stood at the edge of the courtyard, his expression dark—not loud, not explosive, but dangerously calm. His gaze moved from Dylan’s hand on her waist to Diana’s position far too close to him. Theon stood beside him. Silent. Watching. That was worse. Dylan’s hand didn’t drop immediately. Kaelen stepped forward. “Step away from her.” Diana blinked, her thoughts snapping back into place. She stepped back first, creating space between her and Dylan. “I’m fine,” she said quickly. “That’s not the point,” Kaelen replied. Theon finally spoke, his voice quieter—but heavier. “Explain.” The single word settled over the courtyard. Dylan met their gaze without hesitation. “She lost control. I stabilized it.” Kaelen’s eyes narrowed. “By holding her like that?” “It worked,” Dylan said simply. “That doesn’t make it appropriate.” Diana crossed her arms, frowning. “You’re overreacting.” Kaelen glanced at her. “You nearly died days ago.” “I’m standing now.” “Barely.” Silence stretched. Theon’s gaze shifted between them again, calculating. “This is not something to handle here,” he said finally. Kaelen nodded once. “We’re taking this to Father and Mother.” Diana stiffened. “That’s unnecessary.” “It’s happening,” Kaelen replied. Dylan didn’t argue. That alone made Diana’s chest tighten again. The tension hadn’t disappeared. It had only changed. And somehow— That felt even more dangerous.
